BILOXI — Biloxi residents got their first look today at the devastation Hurricane Katrina wreaked on their famed beach front. Landmarks like Beavoir, the final home of Confederate President Jefferson Davis, are virtually demolished.

Josey,

I had a premonition this was going to happen. I hope they had the foresight to remove the furnishings and the other historical items. I've been there twice in my life and consider myself lucky to see one of the homes of one of America's greatest presidents.

I was wondering how Beauvoir had fared myself. I've been there several times and planned to stock up in the museum store and library on my next visit. We had hoped to bring the kids there for a tour at some point; this was one of the very few WBS sites, even in the South, that told the unvarnished truth. It's a terrible loss for the region and the country, far worse than any casino's destruction.

Weisbrot,

Boortz ssems to be more concerned about casinos being on barges than this. Typical economic man. Good thing Bennett stopped gambling.

In the car Tuesday, I heard Boortz downplay his spew on Monday against the gummint for warning New Orleans to evacuate. Earlier in the week he was posturing about how he would have stayed if his wife blah blah. He should be prosecuted for misleading the public and being a public danger.

Later I heard Limbaugh chortling over how some reporter had called the poor idiots in the Superdome "refugees", as if this was giving them some undeserved status.

What a dirt bag.

Weisbrot,

Rush was showing some of that clever humor he is renown for. He was calling the hurricane "Hurricane katrina van der heuvel". He's probably more worried about the Superbowl than anything else. Now, the s.o.b. is trying to portray himself as a defender of the South. Of course he is simply trying to con folks down here. I hope folks remember his comparison of the "civil war" with al-Qaida. Maybe he'll have another photo taken of him for his website holding a Confederate flag with that fierce look of Limbaughian determination on his face.

I didn't hear Boortz the other day, but noted today he was doing his "Zachery Smith" impression over something he said yesterday. Thanks to you I know what it is now.

I hope they rebuild Beauvoir.

I suspect that only private donations will be able to finance that. Or, a governor with a real sack.

AE,

You may be correct.

Latest news on Beauvoir, from a Sons of Confederate Veterans spokesman:

From: Tonnia C. Maddox, CPS **I just spoke with Larry McCluney, 1st Lt. Commander, Mississippi Division, SCV and he assures me that Beauvoir is salvageable!!!

House - 65% of the main house still stands. The porch, windows, doors, column & front porch are gone, but the structure still stands. If the structural integrity is good, the house can be repaired. Status of contents is unknown until we're allowed back into the area.

Library - The first floor is gone, the only thing left on the 1st floor was the statue of Davis which had a 3rd national draped across it. Davis' papers, along with his will, were moved upstairs, so they survived.

Small home where Davis resided - survived

Other buildings, such as the gift shop, are gone.

To view the video of Beauvoir, go to http://www.wlbt.com/ then click on the 2nd Skycopter tour ... this is about 16 minutes long ... Beauvoir is about 9:35 on the film.

We're looking at 2-3 years to repair/rebuilt. Beauvoir depends heavily on tourism for survival, which will present a critical problem while it's being repaired. It's even more critical now that we get the matching funds for the federal grant.

Please consider fundraising within your chapters to help us preserve this piece of our heritage. The notice below is listed on the Mississippi OCR Homepage.

Q,

It is in better shape than I thought. They don't build them the way they used to, do they?

Next time I hope they remove everything.

More updates. It sounds like there has been additional damage.

Compatriots:

It has been our desire to keep all of you who are receiving this up to date on Beauvoir. Thanks to some of our members, the errors of the newspapers have been corrected. Now, we have a first hand report from one who has spent a large part of his life working for Beauvoir.

Chairman of the Combined Boards Rick Forte called a little earlier to give a firsthand report on Beauvoir. He had just returned from there. Now, to understand dedication, Rick, who is without electricity and in Hattiesburg where gas in at a premium, drove down to personally see the damage.

He reports that, as seen in some photos (if you haven't, then view the photos at http://christianresistance.blogspot.com/), the house has suffered severe damage. Although damaged, it can be repaired. There is water damage in the bedrooms on the front of the house. Another site, video, is http://wlbt.com/global/video/popup/pop_player.asp?ClipID1=513483&h1=Skycopter%20on%20the%20Coast%3A%20Third%20Tour&vt1=v&at1=News%20-%20Special%20Coverage&d1=2063133&LaunchPageAdTag=Homepage&activePane=info&playerVersion=9&rnd=89754794 will show a frontal shot that will really upset you.

Rick said that if he blindfolded this writer, who has the honor of being on the Board of Trustees and has spent considerable time at Beauvoir over the years, then took him to Beauvoir, and removed the blindfold, I would not know where I was.

The Hayes Cottage and pavilion are gone. Nothing remains but a slab.

The small library where President Davis lived and wrote, located to the east of Beauvoir, is gone.

The old chapel, museum, and gift shop are all gone, even the artillery piece inside is gone.

The wall in front of the Presidential Library and the flagpoles in front are gone. Rick said the entire lower floor of the Presidential Library is washed out. He said it would be like driving a car under a carport. The only thing remaining is the President's statue, he said just as it was. The sayings located on the walls downstairs, as well as the plaques on the wall telling of the dedication, etc., are all gone.

Rick said the really ironic thing is that he found resting in front of Beauvoir mansion a small stone that had come from one of the tablets with the quotes. He turned it over and saw what it said, and was totally amazed. On this small piece of stone were the words "Deo Vindice." What more can be said.

We will keep you posted.

Again, if you hear anything about our compatriots in the Southern part, please let us know so we can share. We have talked to Rick, Ward Calhoun in Meridian, and Lamar Roberts in Vicksburg who has been without electricity for four days. We have not heard from our Division Commander, or any of the others. Please post us if you hear anything.

When I was a young Airman stationed at Keesler in Biloxi, I visited Beauvoir. It really was a special place, one that made you feel the nobility of the Southern cause and why so many young soldiers fought and died for their way of life.

None of my fellow airman wanted to go see the site with me, most were more interested in hanging out at the local mall. So I walked through the rooms and cemetary outside alone. A nice southern lady told me some of the history behind it.

Just walking through the restored main room and seeing the magnificient decor made me see that this was a great culture. It was down to earth and humble yet refined and graceful at the same time. I could see why someone would die for this.

Anyhow I spent the next couple years in the South and have a great respect for it even while I regret the decay some of it has fallen into on modern times.

A few years later I was working at Fallon NAS in Nevada and some Lt. made some sarcastic comment about Stone Mountain in Georgia and how southerners "Just can't let go" of that stuff. I just smiled and said I wish kids in California had that much pride in their past.

I'm not from the South so I know I'll never feel the emotional tie some here have to the glory of the Old South, but it's places like Beauvoir that stand in stark contradistinction to our modern strip-malls and interstates that can make even a fool like me see that we lost something great.
