Shrinking Detroit Has 12,000 Abandoned Homes

ââ¬ÅWhen itââ¬â¢s lightening and thundering you can hear the bricks just falling,ââ¬Â the 40-year-old nurse said as she looked at the smashed windows and garbage-strewn porch. ââ¬ÅIf you call and ask (the city) about it they say they donââ¬â¢t have the funds to tear it down.ââ¬Â
There are more than 12,000 abandoned homes in the Detroit area, a byproduct of decades of layoffs at the cityââ¬â¢s auto plants and white flight to the suburbs. And despite scores of attempts by government and civic leaders to set the city straight, the automobile capitol of the world seems trapped in a vicious cycle of urban decay.
Detroit has lost more than half its population since its heyday in the 1950ââ¬â¢s. The people who remain are mostly blackââ¬â83 percentââ¬âand mostly working class, with 30 percent of the population living below the poverty line according to the US Census Bureau.
The schools are bad. The roads are full of potholes. Crime is high and so are taxes. The city is in a budget crisis so deep it could end up being run by the state.

I live in its suburbs. They will follow in its path unless some big change is made.
I can only hope that the whole place is turned into farmland. Then it can produce something other than crime and misery. There simply is no point in trying to rebuild the city as a city.
If Japanese Americans had come to Detroit at the end of WWII, this tragedy would have never happened.
People I talk to tell me that Detroit was a beautiful city in the 1950s.

It's a crying shame to look at, many of the houses and apartments are charming and historical but have fallen into disrepair out of neglect. I bet with a little work many of them could be reburbished and sold for $1 million+. This is, if they weren't located in DETROIT! You can be charming & historical all you want, but if the house has blacks neighbors all over the place, no way can you sell it.
It's like seeing a great ancient city's ruins.

Perhaps this is the future of the 'decent' people: once everyone has vacated large areas, and infiltrated the areas where decent whites live, the decent whites will need to run again, and will have nowhere to go but run back to these run-down ruins and rebuild... Then the trash will move back and the migration will start anew....

Hmmm...this is a question of urban planning, meaning how best to manage the transition of a large industrial city back to a state of nature.
**Perhaps a new Michigan State park is in order here, to try and link the larger pockets of cleared and condemned homes into wildlife corridors. This Park, call it Integration Falls, could be expanded as more land becomes available.

Declare these zones "historical white neighborhoods" and allow whites to run them without any forced racial laws. Let whites take this 35 sq. mile over and watch the incredible boom.
Won't ever happen.
We need a constitutional amendment stating:
"The government shall make no law respecting race."
What this means is the government can not make any law based on race. They can not have affirmative action, set-asides, etc.
It means they can not interfere with somebody putting up a WHITES ONLY sign. THe government can not get invovled into any issue of race and that will leave it up to the "people". IF somebody wants a white's only apartment complex, the government can not do anything about it. It is realy freedom.
Won't ever happen.

But why is Detroit deteriorating? Why is there a budget shortfall, in the states largest city, of about 300 million.
Why did so many whites leave?
These questions never seem to be answered?
Forgive me for asking, but I wonder if the sudden influx of blacks coupled with the outflow of whites had any thing to do with it.

If the police (or better yet national guard) could safeguard any new residents who wished to gentrify parts of the city, the city would come back like gangbusters. Unfortunately there is NO policing of the streets and anyone who ventures into Detroit takes his life in his or her hands.

I disagree, the most frustrating part is the inability of anyone to discuss the real cause of this urban cancer- black people themselves. In city after city this tale is repeated with people wondering how to reverse this. It's quite simple- convince white people to move back into the cities. How high will oil prices have to go before this happens?

When bubonic plague spreads far enough east, some of these rust-belt cities are going to have major public health problems. You know the population of rats and feral cats and dogs in 36 square miles of abandoned buildings has to be very high. Plague has been spreading east since it arrived in San Francisco a century ago. It's out on Colorado's eastern plains now, and the prairie dogs aren't even worth shooting at anymore, since there aren't many of them left. It'll pause at the Missouri/Mississippi river line, but only briefly. Even with antibiotics effective and available in the US, bubonic plague is 14% fatal.

This is the endgame of racial integration-when blacks reach critical mass, take over the government and start raising taxes on the whites to support the welfare state pipe-dreams of the blacks and other minorities, the whites predictably move out. When you kill the dog, all the fleas will die, or at least start moving so they can latch onto another dog in the parasite/host paradigm that exemplifies modern race relations in America. The result is empty inner cities.

It is difficult to think of a more dishonest term than "white flight." If anything, European Americans were pushed out of Detroit. They didn't want to leave their homes and schools behind, but experience with crime & falling property values, and concern for their children led them to recognize that they were being pushed out of Detroit.
They didn't flee, they were pushed and pushed hard. It is adding insult to injury to mock them as "white flight."

But wait! Don't they have that stellar mayor Kwame Kilpatrick? Maybe if he had a few less exorbitant dinners and leased a few less Lincoln Navigators the city might be able to start recovering? Nah, not with him (or any of his ilk) in charge.
It's a little sad to me. I've always wanted to go to Detroit and tour the auto museums and even some of the factories because I'm a car buff. I'm afraid for my own safety, though.

I love articles like this. The comparison between real Africans and the mythological-hypothetical Africans on TV and in the movies is funny (if you have a sick sense of humor). The entertainment Africans are almost always highly intelligent, moral, and well qualified at what ever they do. The only abilities demonstrated by the Africans in this article are making excuses for their own failures.

Hi Bo! I see that you are over here now too! I quite agree with you that it is insulting to refer to "white flight" in its usual context, but I would take it to a more honest term and call it ethnic cleansing. The people who leave their homes in what is called "white flight" are presumed to be "racists" while racists are presumed to be evil doers. I believe that what these European Americans on the run truly are is refugees because they have been displaced, and aggressors don't flee.
Yesterday my husband and I were wondering around a historic San Francisco community. On the street car going downtown to work I had been admiring some charming old houses within view from the train tracks so we took a walk through some blocks I had never seen before. The stereotype about gays being good preservationists might explain the good condition of that obviously historical community near the gay-associated Castro District, but I wondered how long it would take before the homeys discovered and destroyed it because we are getting more black passengers on the street car that I normally ride.
I don't think black people are all the same of course. Yet the street car line I have been riding for 17 years has really gotten unpleasant over about the past year, and the number of black passengers has been on the increase over the same period of time. When we first moved here 17 years ago, the neighborhood was a mixture of Europeans and Asians. Each race left each other alone. Since the black people have been moving in, even a black public transit driver has complained to my husband about the fights on the street car and the police having to be called. In the past month or so I have noticed that even the young European Americans seem to be thinking that it is acceptable or even cool to act like Homey in the Hood.
If we owned the apartment we are living in, we would be selling and moving immediately. I am grateful we don't have a lease anymore. We don't have any minor children or we'd be leaving now because there is no way I would want my children to attend school with Homey in the Hood.
It has to be horribly hard to be a hard-working, respectful, and respectable black homeowner who knows that your arrival in a community will be taken as a bad omen. As much as I sympathize with how difficult that must be, I still want a white neighborhood.

I knew the number of 12,000 vacant housing units in "the Detroit area" is much too low. Here is a link to data from the U.S. Census Bureau showing that in 2000 there were 38,668 vacant housing units in the city of Detroit alone:

The link reveals that the number of non-Hispanic whites living in Detroit is actually under the 100,000 mark at 99,921. Just for reference, Detroit had a population of 116,340 in 1880 and was virtually all white. Detroit had more people in the years leading up to 1880 (in the 1870's) then it has today! Amazing isn't it? And the link doesnââ¬â¢t reveal it but you can bet that the 99,921 whites are mostly old and childless ââ¬â dying out!
The fact that the article reports 12,000 vacant homes versus the nearly 39,000 vacant homes reported by the 2000 census shows once again the lack of accurate reporting where the facts make the minority element look bad.
Here is another link that shows that between 1970 and 2000, Detroit lost 154,000 homes to people who would not or could not maintain them.

The most amazing thing about all of it is the play it has gotten in that cancer otherwise known as the mass media. Think about how different the world would be if for all those years we had a media railing against black thugs for all of their criminal behavior and cops who were allowed to protect us and punish them instead of what we have gotten. Detroit would be a much nicer and much more white city.
The criminals working in the media are much worse than the black criminals they cover for. Nobody ever says that but what else can a person conclude? Doesn't that require work? And lest we forget: farming causes emotional pain to africans. The very idea of growing food ,even if it is to feed themselves,is repulsive. Why thats what they had to do when they were slaves. Since slavery just ended last year ; I believe the solution is insensitive...The pain is still to fresh.
Why dosen't the city gut these houses and have an auction for the still workable parts ex. refrigerators, sinks, cabinets spare wood the sale of metal ect. They may not get much out of this but, when you have NO money and you are about to fold I would think a little would be at least something.

I remember when Detroit was a GREAT CITY. We use to take the train up to visit my uncle and his family. Detroit died for a lot of reasons, not the least of which was black racism. I remember the riots in 1943, and the riots in the 60's. Hatred dies hard and, black leaders who preach hatred in a town where Mr. Ford payed all-comers great salaries have reaped their own sewn hate.

Detroit is certainly a surreal city. I went there a number of years ago on business and brought my girlfriend, and I tried to mentally prepare her for it. She simply could not believe what she was seeing. One thing that really amazed her (and me as well, although I'd seen it before) was the sheer grace and splendor of many of the homes and architecture. Woodward Blvd. must have been quite a sight to see sixty or seventy years ago. Who owns all of these houses? Detroit now looks like a set from a "Batman" movie, or perhaps "The Crow".
What amazes me about Detroit is how deep the self-deception extends - and how the fundamental character of the city reflects the inherent nature of the African mindset and its emphasis on flash over substance. Consider their ridiculous "people mover" project. This was obviously going to be a complete failure from the outset, and was not at all what the city needed, yet "someone" decided that this ridiculous, flashy "people mover" project was really going to be the thing to show the world what Detroit was made of.
Of course, the Feds bellied up about $200 million to construct the thing, and I don't think it ever turned a profit. Of course, those geniuses doing the economic forecast - undoubtedly Stanfordites in the tradition of the Amy Biehl School Of Overly Optimistic African Economics - failed to "project" that the system would eventually carry less than 10% of its projected riders. (I am reminded here of HomoRACIAL Rick's fool-proof method of economic forecasting - just look at the relative concentration of races as a guide to whether or not real estate will increase or decrease in the future!)
Biehl, as you may recall, thought Africa was "the future": Amy used to tell us that Africa was the "continent of the future." Amy was drawn by the numerous democratic struggles throughout the continent. She knew that these emerging democracies would awaken and transform a sleeping giant. She recognized that -- because of its economic sophistication and developed infrastructure -- a democratic South Africa could become the dominant player in an African transformation. This realization -- coupled with the depth and breadth of human rights abuse -- took Amy to South Africa. As is often the case, one needs to be a PhD candidate at a prestigious university to come to such an amazing conclusion. Liberal intellectuals are, of course, too smart to see what is self-apparent to the rest of us.
In fact, the city of Detroit now has something like a $400 million dollar budget deficit, and has had to slash transportation all around. One of the more comical aspects of this project as I recall was the fact that some of the parts were engraved with "Made in South Africa" on them, which of course had to be torn up and reinstalled so as to remove the oh-so-offensive logo. As usual, this $30,000 "outrage" was a Very Big Deal to the citizens of Detroit, while the nascent flushing of $200 million down the proverbial toilet garnered nary a peep.
Another telling aspect of the "people mover" project was (as I recall, been some years since I thought about this) that they simply painted over or boarded up all of the garish urban decay whenever possible. So, you'll see sections of Detroit that just have a thin strip of colorful paint to cover the overarching blight, maintaining the 'illusion' (providing you could ignore everything you saw immediately before and after you got on the "people mover" and only look immediately out at eye level while on it) that there was no problem at all. This Potemkin Road approach is clearly not fooling anyone, yet it is quite telling. It's as if the whole thing is a cruel joke, and I can't help but draw parallels between the mentality behind it all and the fact that Robert Mugabe buys jets and tanks while his country starves.
Ironically, the biggest attraction to the city of Detroit every year is the 'Detroit Electronic Music Festival', which is basically an outdoor rave. It attracts about 70,000 people alone from outside the country (mostly Europe) who fly in every year to see the various electronic acts. Thing is, the city has thus far refused to fund the festival, despite the fact that it is a proven money-maker and certainly the only thing that ever gets any quantity of people to go to the pesthole that is Detroit. I'm sure to the Europeans, this is quite a "quaint" and "enriching" cultural experience - something they'll undoubtedly talk about with their friends at home, not realizing that they should think of it more as a Preview of Coming Attractions than anything else.

Is there only 36 square miles of vacant Detroit territory? I read 50 or 60 square miles are vacant! From the attached link:

It's funny to see the issue of the demise of Detroit being debated on the "conservative" Free Republic website by the "Freepers". They explain the liberalism of Detroit as the reason why Detroit is a failed city but only a few precocious Freepers even hint that race is part of the reason. Of course, race is the primary reason for Detroit's decline to urban barbarism, and liberalism has only some of the blame. After all, liberal cities with white majorities, like Seattle, Boston, and New York, are still liveable, although not the sort of place most of us would want to live. Race is the paramount reason why black-majority cities collapse into uncivilized heaps of rubble and the impiricle evidence is quite plain- Detroit, East St. Louis, Gary, Benton Harbor, Camden, Newark and Atlanta with Baltimore, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Chicago, Memphis, New Orleans, St. Louis and Cincinnati racing to catch up in the spiral downwards. Sadly, blacks are an incompetent people. This truth is too much for the conservative computer nerds at Free Republic to stomach.

Detroit, a wasteland I've been familiar with for decades, began its decline when "King" Coleman Young became mayor in the sixties. His slogan, "Power for Tomorrow" intoxicated the mindless ghetto dwellers and they kept him in office until he died. He blamed absolutely everything on whites and yelled "racism" at every failure he regularly demonstrated. His name is now in stone on the City-County Building downtown.
What the article fails to mention is that nothing, that's NOTHING, is done by the city government without consideration of race. If it ain't Black then it ain't goin' to happen.
And said government is comprised of the same people who live like potentates in the Lago, Nigeria of the U.S. and enjoy the incumbency of the old Soviet parliment. The citizens love these losers.
Try walking down two blocks anywhere in the city without being accosted by a wild black individual. Just try it and be prepared to fight.
As a side note, The Detroit News reported last week where the city council voted a million dollars to keep a deer herd on Belle Isle, the park in the Detroit river. They're laying off police officers and firefighters, ending services like no tomorrow and closing schools, but the deer herd is safe. I'm not making this up, folks.

I am so grateful to find a website that speaks to the truth of black failure to accept European values as superior to their sad legacy of a poor value system. The book "Culture Matters" by Harrison and Huntington makes an effort to explain this problem with blacks.
Blacks are not Genetically inferior - even the most criminal have normal IQs as compared to the same population of whites. There are plenty of examples of black intelligence.
There are not plenty of examples of a positive, thriving, black culture.

Detroit is a sterling example of what happens when 1rst world culture and setting collide with 3rd world people and attitudes. What was once a dynamo of American industrial might and techological achievement has reverted to a Zimbabwe-like environment of degraded, failed society. Like in the former Rhodesia, the people who came into power in Detroit had no clue as to how to effectively and efficiently run a government. They inherited a magnificent edifice of Western cultural achievement, & in a short period of time turned it into a cesspool.
As was pointed out in other posts, Robert Mugabe and Coleman Young took their government "leadership" cues from the same Marxist playbook. The end results are pretty much identical.

About the "People Mover", late black Mayor "King" Coleman Young's white elephant of a civic project, it has never turned a profit.
As well, because it had to travel, elevated in its course, through the downtown and pass by a large number of huge, vacant and delapidated buildings, the city paid over a half million bucks to have awnings placed on windows of said vacant buildings to attempt to hide the decay. They also painted over many of the windows visible from the mover.
All in all, this is what blacks want for DIEtroit because they keep voting the same people in year after year and keep trashing their own town.

Blacks and whites are separated by a full standard deviation in IQ, the iron-clad consquence of which is that less than one black in 6 has even an average white IQ.

They're blaming white flight (read: "white racism"), and a declining auto industry (a very slowly declining industry) for Detroit being a basketcase. Why not blame the blacks? What city in America, or the world, is 83% black, but not a basketcase? What do you think we'd find if we looked at the choices made by the elected black officials?

I know why and I look forward to the day when "liberals" and their friends in the "minority community" look at your areas and start demanding special economic programs to allow them to live there. After all, for years the tribe has been preaching to the rest of us about "egalitarianism", it is only fair that the broth you cooked that you have to eat as well. 60% is far from 83%. Chicago has twice as many non-blacks. And, Illinois is probably much better able to subsidize Chicago than Michigan is to subsidize Detroit. This includes white suburbs, the vast majority of state education spending that goes to black school districts, etc. And, the decline of population in Chicago shows that it's going down hill, as well as probably any other measure you can think of.

Manhattan is an overpriced, overcrowded, decadent piece of flotsam in a sea of 85% non-whites in Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx. If that's the so called "leader" then our doom rapidly approaches.
There was a 70's movie made in Cuba called [B]La Ultima Cena[/B] about a 18th Century Spaniard slave-owner who has a "last supper" with 12 of his slaves before offing them all. One line sticks with me however, from one White man to another goes, "you know what will happen when the slaves outnumber us here."
