Little Geneva Othello.
[QUOTE]My daughter read Othello last night, and this morning she and I discussed Brabantio dying of grief because his daughter Desdemona marries a black man. "Most fathers would," said I. Shakespeare was the master of exploring the question of "otherness." In The Merchant of Venice, the Jew Shylock is somewhat successful at disguising his differences, but Othello the Moor cannot hide his skin color. Shakespeare was also the master of allowing justice to have the last word. The interracial marriage that Brabantio calls a "treason of the blood" results in the death of Desdemona, who had so blatantly violated the fifth commandment. Thomas Rymer saw the moral of the play to be "a caution to all Maidens of Quality how, without their Parents consent, they run away with Blackamoors." Samuel Taylor Coleridge observed, "it would be something monstrous to conceive this beautiful Venetian girl falling in love with a veritable Negro. It would argue a disproportionateness, a want of balance, in Desdemonaââ¬Â¦" Iago describes the treachery in just this way: "Foul disproportion, thoughts unnaturalââ¬Â¦ An old black ram is tupping your white eweââ¬Â¦ your daughter and the Moor are now making the beast with two backs." My daughter highlighted these profound words from Brabantio:
For if such actions may have passage free, Bond-slaves and pagans shall our statesmen be.
Something tells me that Othello is no longer considered shocking. One day last week, I strolled through a Super Wal-Mart and a mall. In the Wal-Mart, no less than 70% of the signs hanging from the ceiling displayed more than one race. I presume that it is now hateful to show white people alone. At the mall, sex sells, and it is now common to see white men and black women displayed in varying degrees of intimacy. Iââ¬â¢d like to be a fly on the wall in the marketing departments where such decisions are made. They have obviously concluded that the public is not yet ready to see black men and white women in advertisements.
