Interesting article, Josey.

It'll be nice of some of those alternative calibers become popular enough to make their guns and accessories (especially magazines) reasonably cheap and plentiful. Maybe they'll become popular on a platform other than the AR. The AR is nice, but I still hate that direct gas system. I'd rather have a piston in there and have a slightly heavier rifle.

I hadn't yet heard of the 6.5mm Grendel, but it sounds awesome for long-range shooting!

The 6.8mm SPC is one I've heard a bit about. I don't doubt that it has great short-range stopping power -- that's what it was designed for -- but I kind of wonder if it's as good against heavy body armor as steel-core 5.56 (which is a Class IV threat according to the NIJ).

HK is in the works of getting their new design sold to fedgovinc. It uses a piston instead of the tradional gas tube/impingement system. Im sure they will also offer it in 6.8mm versions if fedgovinc decides to go that way.

(Not that I'm ever going to give up my lower receivers that have paper trails, though -- I'm keeping my guns regardless of what laws are passed.)

JoseyWales,

Interesting article. The problem is most of these cartridges do not use the standard AR bolts and will not fit and feed right in the standard AR .223 magazines.

The article leaves out the .300 Whisper(90-240 grain load) and 6mm/.223 cartridges(60-100 grain load) the only AR wildcats that work normally with standard AR bolts .223 magazines. A 6.5/.223 cartridge might be something to think about too but I do know if anyone has made one.

And then there are 7.62x39mm AR but it does feed right in AR mags, I saw a picture of one that uses AK mags, an odd looking gun.

I am a bit confused, I read one article that said 6.8x43mm uses standard AR .223 magazines and one that said it used spacial magazines. (it looks like it does not work right, but will work, not good). The 6.5mm Grendel does have good ballistics.

The site model1sales.com sells a .300 Fireball Heavy Barrel for $180.00 but they only have 16'' I rather have 20'' or 24''.

Thanks for those links, Faust. But one nitpick:
JoseyWales,

Angler,

Yes you are right! Sorry about that.

More 6.8SPC stuff.

AR15/M16 magazines do not work with 6.8SPC. See link:

6.8SPC FAQ http://www.demigod.org/~zak/firearms/6.8SPC/faq.php

$1,533 for an AR-15 upper is way too much, you can get an AR-10 for less than that.

BARRETT 6.8MM 468 16.5" UPPER ONLY $1,533.3 http://www.impactguns.com/store/BFMM468UPPER.html

BARRETT M468 6.8MM REM SPC MAGAZINE 30 RD $38.88 http://www.impactguns.com/store/M468-30.html

Model 1 sales has Upper Halves and Barrels much cheaper

20'' Chrome Moly Heavy Barrel, 6.8 Remington SPC $195.00

20'' AR15 Standard Upper Half, 6.8mm Rem SPC, chrome lined chamber & bore, 1-9.5'' twist, A2 flashider $400.00

Download on how to build an AR frame from folded and welded sheet steel with hand tool and welding. The title is "9mm AR15" but it has plans for building a AR-15 lower frame as well.
$1,533 for an AR-15 upper is way too much, you can get an AR-10 for less than that.
Agreed! The mags were somewhat reasonably priced, but 1500 clams for an upper?! I'd definitely get an AR-10, DSArms FAL, or M1A for that.

Those are some more great links you posted, BTW.

Angler,

Well Model 1 sales has the 6.8mm Upper for $485.00 If you have an AR and the money to spend it might be fun to play with.

But one can pick up a Remington for $402.32

Remington MODEL 7400 .308win $402.32 http://www.originaldissent.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16573

I bet you would like the K2

Daewoo K2 http://world.guns.ru/assault/as32-e.htm

I still rather like .300 Whisper. I think .300 Whisper would be pretty good on heavy body armor with heavy FMJ bullets at close range and with steel-core bullet very good. The non-steel-core The 7.62 Nato(.308win) Ball M118 can penetrate the 3.5 steel plate at 800 yars. The 7.62-mm special ball (M118) bullet consists of a gilding metal jacket and a lead antimony slug. It is a boat-tailed bullet (rear of bullet is tapered) and weighs 173 grains. It would do some major damage, even if it doesn't kill. The Russian 9x39mm 200 grain steel-core bullet subsonic load will penetrate a US Army Helmet at 300 yards. I think .300 Whisper would penetrate very well out too 300 yards with a good heavy FMJ bullet and better with a good heavy steel-core bullet.
