The local ABC network interupted the only descent show about local affairs to report that one of the wanna-be Ehrenburgs died this evening of lung cancer.

Jennings was a commissar. I don't care if he rests in peace.

Jennings' successor, like Rather's and like Brokaw's, will make less than him. His successor's successor will make still less. And so on until they're finally at a scale commensurate with their job as newsreaders, as the entire rest of the planet calls them. And it couldn't happen to a more deserving bunch.

Does anyone still watch the network Nightly News shows? While they're not as bad as FOX "News" they appear anachronistic in today's internet world and 60 hour work weeks.

I'm actually shocked that the market is as high as it is for local newscasters.

You may dislike the Brokaw/Rther/Jennings crew, but they're Yodas with teleprompters compared to the utter f'in boobs who yuk it up on local newscasts....many of whom get millions of $ per annum to look telegenic while faking seriousness and sincerity. If you've ever watched a local 'caster sporting a grimace for the terrible traffic accident that took four lives, and then, on a dime, flash a yuk-yuk grin as he tosses it over to Kareem and sports, you know what I'm saying here.

I don't own a TV. Did P.J. have a farewell signoff?

Now were down to only one stooge out of three. (I think)

The following quote from a media insider in 1880 says it all.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

http://www.constitution.org/pub/swinton_press.htm

John Swinton on the independence of the press Variations on the quote below have been misattributed as a response to a toast, by John Swinton, as "the former Chief of Staff at the New York Times", before the New York Press Club in 1953. However, research reveals that Swinton (1829-1901), after moving to New York, wrote an occasional article for the New York Times and was hired on a regular basis in 1860 as head of the editorial staff. Afterward holding this position throughout the Civil War, he left the paper in 1870 and became active in the labor struggles of the day. He later served eight years in the same position on the New York Sun and later published a weekly labor sheet, John Swinton's Paper.

The remarks were apparently made by Swinton, then the preeminent New York journalist, probably one night in 1880. Swinton was the guest of honour at a banquet given him by the leaders of his craft. Someone who knew neither the press nor Swinton offered a toast to the independent press. Swinton outraged his colleagues by replying:

There is no such thing, at this date of the world's history, in America, as an independent press. You know it and I know it.

There is not one of you who dares to write your honest opinions, and if you did, you know beforehand that it would never appear in print. I am paid weekly for keeping my honest opinion out of the paper I am connected with. Others of you are paid similar salaries for similar things, and any of you who would be so foolish as to write honest opinions would be out on the streets looking for another job. If I allowed my honest opinions to appear in one issue of my paper, before twenty-four hours my occupation would be gone.

The business of the journalists is to destroy the truth, to lie outright, to pervert, to vilify, to fawn at the feet of mammon, and to sell his country and his race for his daily bread. You know it and I know it, and what folly is this toasting an independent press?

We are the tools and vassals of rich men behind the scenes. We are the jumping jacks, they pull the strings and we dance. Our talents, our possibilities and our lives are all the property of other men. We are intellectual prostitutes.

Yeah he was Canadian, but recently got his US citizenship. So he went out an American.

Good or Bad? Makes no difference now. Advocate or critic he'll opine no more.

I for one wish him peace. I'd wish no less for any man.
