By human nature, all of man's voluntary actions are aimed at self-pleasure and self-preservation. Altruism may be pleasurable for the giver. Good = 'any object of desire'. We must live under a social contract to have peace We need a sovereign to enforce the social contract

I got a 100% St. Augustine. Lutherans I would think would tend toward him anyway.

Just read a book by the new pope. Guy likes St. Augustine more than St. Thomas Aquinas. Very significant. Very rare for a Catholic theologian to feel that way,

I wouldn't put too much stock into this though. I just read a bunch of quotes from the guy I agreed with the most and I disagreed with these quotes. Only you truly know your philosophy. However, it was pretty accurate to link me with Aquinas.

Hobbes' main and very simple idea in this area seems to be about man generally being selfish and acting upon what is best for himself(or herself.lol) even when what is being done may appear to be selfless or altruistic. And I agree, most of the time, anyway. but looking at the hume's quotes I have no idea how I got that as number 3.

It looks like the two of us are very different philosophically. I prefer John Locke to Thomas Hobbes but it isn't on here. I actually think human nature is a little better than he gives it credit, at least most of the time.
