Shauntez T. Hairston, 25, of Edwardsville, Ill., was charged with first degree murder for the death of Marissa N. Tharp, 20, of New Boston, Ill. (Handout)
A college student and the felon from Edwardsville charged Thursday with murdering her had each called police numerous times in recent months, accusing each other of harassment.
The body of Marissa Tharp, 20, of New Boston, Ill., was found beaten and strangled about 1 p.m. Tuesday by police in a rickety mobile home in the 5700 block of Old Missouri Road in Alorton.
On Thursday, Shauntez T. "Shaun" Hairston, 25, was charged in St. Clair County Circuit Court with first-degree murder in Tharp's killing. Hairston was being held in the St. Clair County Jail in lieu of $1 million bond.
Tharp was last seen Monday when she left her job as a waitress in Muscatine, Iowa, not far from her home in New Boston, about 200 miles north of St. Louis. Advertisement
She had last spoken with her family about 11:30 p.m. Monday. She told a sister she was going to watch a fireworks display in Davenport about 20 miles from her job.
Illinois State Police said they don't know how Tharp wound up in the Metro East.
"Whether she drove herself down here or was abducted, we still don't know," said Master Sgt. James Morrisey with the Illinois State Police. Her car was found in East St. Louis.
Tharp's father said his daughter had met Hairston at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, where she was a student in 2003 and 2004.
Campus officials said Hairston never attended the university.
On Thursday, Campus Detective Justin Lieberman said Tharp had called SIUE police in February from Macomb, Ill., where she moved after transferring from SIUE to Western Illinois University for the 2004-05 school year.
She alleged that Hairston had hit her in the arm when the two were in a car together during her visit to the SIUE campus Feb. 5. Lieberman said Tharp said she was in Edwardsville visiting friends.
No charges were filed because Tharp called 10 days after the alleged incident and wouldn't make an in-person report, Lieberman said.
He said Hairston and Tharp each had called him several times, complaining the other was harassing them.
**Hairston has served three prison terms for numerous felony convictions and parole violations dating to 1999. He was convicted of aggravated assault and drug possession in Madison County. He also was convicted of possession of a weapon by a felon in Champaign County in 2002. **
He was discharged from prison in September.
The suspect's father, Kenneth Hairston, said his son had introduced Tharp to the family as his girlfriend.
"They had been together for a while, I think on and off," the elder Hairston said.
Kenneth Hairston said his wife did upholstery work at the mobile home where Tharp's body was found, and his son sometimes spent the night there.
Kenneth Hairston said he and his wife had gone to the trailer Tuesday morning to pick up some material. He said they encountered an agitated Shaun Hairston pacing outside the trailer.
"He was very upset and didn't want us to go in the trailer," Kenneth Hairston said. "He said he'd gotten upset at her (Tharp)."
The elder Hairston said he and his wife became concerned and drove to the Alorton police station to suggest they check the trailer.
Tharp was a star volleyball player at the small high school she attended near New Boston. Her father, Kenny Tharp, said she had planned to study criminal justice at Western Illinois.
He described her as a caring person and suggested her trusting nature might have gotten her into trouble.

Interracial dating is a bad idea. However, even worse is the murder. It is all a chain of events which leads to one common starting point, and that is that mixng races causes trouble.

And why is it me that makes the world a horrible place? I simply said a few words you did not like. How about the ape that killed your cousin, and those that unleashed the animals upon us and force us to live with them and be silent when they rape, rob, and kill us?

So your asking me what I think of the guy that killed my cousin? That basterd deserves to rot in hell and die a horrible death. I just don't understand how you can sit there and say such mean things about a person that is not only dead and died a horrible death, but also who was such a good person and who you did not even know. Before you go and say things like that about a person don't you think you should ATLEAST know them? Now let me ask you a question - What if Marissa's mother, father, or sister got on this website and seen what you wrote. They would never let you forget the horrible things you said. You, of all people I have ever heard of, need to watching your *ing mouth. I also do not under said all of this rascist crap? Sure the guy was a *ing useless person who was a waste of air and I realize that a lot of black guys are thugs and all that but do you think that sitting here and calling the niggers and saying all this crap is going to change anything? Of course not - it will only make things worse.
This is to EVERYONE: Did you know that someone who has committed first degree murder can spend 20-25 years in jail but yet someone who deals dope or crack will be in jail for 50 years? I personally think that is the most ****ed up thing I have ever heard of... I do not get why the murderer of my cousin will be out on the streets again in 20 years. My question is: Is Marissa (my cousin) coming back in 20 years? No shes not. So why should that drug dealing (seriously) murderer be out walking to streets when Marissa can't have that opportunity? I personally would much rather have a coke dealer as a neighbor then a murderer? Agree?

Alex Linder's VNN staff investigated the Marissa Tharp murder, and, interviewed friends, relatives and police officials; came to the conclusion that Tharp was only a college related acquaintence of Shauntez Hairston.
If there had been anything more than that, Alex Linder would have said so, because as we all know, Alex believes in calling a jew a jew, and a nigger a nigger...:boxing:

Drug dealers generally are scumbags, but should they get more time in prison than an actual killer, of course not. And what does a drug dealer really do anyway besides provide drugs to people who go looking for them? And than there are these lovely types of stories, also:

As for nigger killers, like the one in the title of the thread, I don't think they should be sentenced to any time in prison. Hang em, hang em high and get it over with.

OK, so you think murderers should get tougher sentences than drug dealers. I agree. I also find coke dealers worthy of death.
How about execution? How do you feel about the death penalty?

Oh, and has it ever occurred to you that even nice people, or even allegedly nice people like your alleged cousin, now and again make errors in judgment?
Your post comes off as either a complete fraud, or as a near-illiterate overwhelmed by emotion. Hard to say which, given that if it was my cousin, I'd be upset as well.
May I suggest you learn how to use the "Preview" feature to put forth your views more lucidly?
So your asking me what I think of the guy that killed my cousin? Angeleyes,
I think julie is just a teenage girl overwhelmed by emotion, I would not hold it against her.
It is always sad to see a nice girlââ¬â¢s life ruined by poor judgment in men. QUOTE She was a 2003 graduate of Westmer High School, Joy, where she was a member of the National Honor Society and played volleyball. She was attending Western Illinois University, where she was completing her sophomore year. She enjoyed swimming and loved the river. She was a member of First Christian Church, Keithsburg.
I find this story very odd. I was born and raised in the area mentioned, went to SIUE, and was a newspaper editor for a paper that covered Alorton, which is essentially a black slum. Not once in my life did I ever see a woman who looked like the victim in Alorton. I suspect there is a lot more to this story than is admitted in the story.

I agree that it is strange that the girl was hanging out in that Alorton. Most likely she was involved in drugs and or prostitution. I used to own propertly in that area. Every white girl, that I met there was doing both. The press and her family were probably trying to make her look like some sweet little thing like that Holloway girl that disappeared in Aruba.

I was thinking drugs myself. She doesn't have that "hooker look" in her pictures unless she'd really gone downhill since the photo. Whatever the full story is, it's not being told in the newspaper article. Whatever the story, it's a shame this tragedy happened.

What are the chances a relative found this forum and this posting just in time to vent her, ahem, outrage with a poster. Say 1 in 100 billion. Ah, there ya go...that explains her presence here.

Interesting Timing I'd say!
Another poor person who refuses to except the possiblity that this young woman may have had a secret life that her family and friends were didn't know about.
