Based on my experience, the rule of thumb is to always go to court if you receive a traffic ticket. If the cop does not show up, you generally have the charges automatically thrown out. This happened to me twice.
If the cop does show, you usually can negotiate a lesser charge. I have observed this.
I spoke to a local cop today who I was friends with before he became a cop. Apparently this particular town requires the cops to go to court and they even get extra pay for the chore. But he said in most cases he reduces the fine of the ticket to a lesser charge if the violator is reasonable.
I got caught in a speed trap out of state and am still awaiting the court date. It has been over three months.
