I learned from the web that the co-inventor of the transistor William Schockley had very controversial views on race. Is it a common knowledge? Why haven't I seen any mention of this on boards like this? He looked like quite an influential and respected scientist and researcher.

I think it is pretty common knowledge that Shockley was a racist.
A book, The Genius Factory, came out recently that chronicles the lives of Shockley and other American eugenicists. The author also interviews a few of the 200 or so babies that were born as a result of the Repository for Germinal Choice sperm bank. Interesting read.

And he was right, of course.
