Officials Search For Arsonist, Rape Suspect Vigilantes Torch House Where Girl Was Raped

HAMILTON, Ohio -- Officials are hoping to keep peace in a Tri-state community after a very intense and dangerous situation Tuesday night, News 5's Courtis Fuller reported.

It all began after a report of a 9-year-old girl being raped in a vacant house across the street from her home last weekend. The attack happened Sunday in the 900 block of Sycamore Street in Hamilton.

Then, someone set fire Tuesday evening to the house where the attack occurred. Six Mexican immigrants were renting the house, and neighbors believe the attacker lived there, Fuller reported. Nearby residents called 911 when the fire started.

Caller: "Get a fire department on Sycamore Street right now. They burned the house."

Dispatcher: "Which house?"

Caller: "The one the man raped that girl in."

In addition to the rape investigation, police searched for an arsonist in the neighborhood, offering a reward of up to $5,000.

The arsonist will face charges "either on the state level or the federal level. And in this case, this house is a rental property, so it falls in the definition of commercial property ... and there are significant federal penalties associated with those kind of fires," said Marshall Hill, an ATF agent.

Many residents in the area feel the situation could get worse before it gets better.

"They bring in 20 or 30 ATF agents and go door to door and try to find an arsonist. But then when a child gets raped, you've got three or four officers and nobody's going door to door," said Tim Carew, a neighbor.

The tension was so bad, that while News 5 was at the scene, police officers received a call to report to a local school, Fuller reported.

"They would just like some police presence when the kids get out of school," an unidentified police officer said. "Some of the parents have been concerned with some things that have been going on in the neighborhood, so they would just like more visibility with the police department.

Hamilton Mayor Don Ryan issued a statement regarding the recent events at the home.

"This is a terrible, heinous crime and I believe it was a random act of violence and not a racial incident. Chief Ferdelman has assured me that our full resources are being devoted to solving the crime and protecting all persons and property. Detectives have been working 16 to 20 hours per day since the crime occurred, and the investigation is continuing to develop leads and follow up on them.

"In addition, we will be stepping up our patrols and police and fire presence for the foreseeable future. To address last night's arson Fire Chief Joe Schutte has called in the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms to assist in this investigation. We pledge ... to bring these crimes to a successful conclusion and continue the safety and security of our community."

Police said they hope to release a sketch of the rape suspect soon. He was described as an Hispanic man, 22 years old, 5 feet 8 inches tall, with a tattoo on his inner forearm

A perfect example of "mission creep" by the ever expanding cancer that is "our federal government."
