Vandals blacken faces on Confederate monument

PORTSMOUTH, Va. City officials want to know why vandals used paint to blacken the faces of soldier sculptures in Portsmouth's Confederate Monument over the weekend.

Authorities told the Virginian-Pilot they haven't made any arrests in the incident, which was discovered Saturday morning.

City museums director Nancy Perry says the vandals used spray paint. The monument features a 48-foot-tall granite pillar surrounded by four, life-size metal figures of a sailor, cavalryman, infantryman and artillery man.

Each represents a different branch of the Confederate forces.

Perry tells the Virginian-Pilot she's unsure of the symbolism, though she knows there must be a message.

The monument is on the National Register of Historic Places.
