Soy contains phytoestrogens, which imitate estrogen in the human body. Soy intake can depress testosterone levels, and is especially dangerous for boys during adolescence. Soy has also been linked to infertility. Soy is pushed as 'healthy' for two main reasons: 1. Ideological -- according to the vegan crowd, it isn't meat, so therefore it must be good for you. 2. Economic -- Archer Daniels Midland and Monsanto like it because it is very cheap to produce, and they can use it in everything. Don't believe the hype folks. If you're drinking soy milk and eating tofu, because you think they are healthy, think again. You'd be much better off with a juicy steak and a glass of wine. This information has been circulating among whole-foods and health advocates for a few years, but it is just now starting to reach the medical establishment.

Study: Soya threat to fertility Scientists found genistein could cause sperms to "burn out."

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (Reuters) -- A plant chemical found in soya, tofu and legumes could potentially damage sperm and affect male fertility, a British researcher said on Wednesday.

Professor Lynn Fraser, of King's College London has shown that genistein, which can mimic the effect of the female hormone oestrogen, affects sperm in mice.

But it seems to have an even stronger impact on human sperm.

In laboratory tests, Fraser found that small amounts of the chemical can cause human sperm to "burn out" and lose fertility.

"Human sperm proved to be even more responsive than mouse sperm to genistein," Fraser told a fertility meeting.

She added that if women eat soya and other foods high in genistein it might have a bigger impact on male fertility because the chemical is likely to affect sperm when it is in the female preparing to fertilize an egg.

"Maternal exposure to the compounds is probably more important than paternal exposure," Fraser explained.

Although it is very preliminary research, Fraser speculated that the findings could have an impact on women trying to conceive.

"On the basis of what we have seen, it might be a practical thing to do if you are in the habit of eating lots of soya-based products to restrict your diet for a short time over the window of ovulation," she told the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology meeting.

Professor Richard Sharpe, of Edinburgh University in Scotland, described the research as interesting and said the results were surprising.

"It could of course have human health/fertility implications as indicated by the authors," he said in a statement.

But Sharpe added that oriental societies that traditionally eat a soya-rich diet show no signs of reduced fertility that he is aware of.

The effects on sperm in the laboratory may also not be directly related to what may happens in real life.

Dr Allan Pacey, of the University of Sheffield in England, said it is worrying if these compounds affect mature sperm.

"It's early days, but clearly if what happens in the laboratory also occurs in the woman's fallopian tube as the sperm make their way to the egg, then there would be the potential for fertilization to fail," he explained.

Soy sucks; at my school, it is one of the 'forbidden foods' for athletes during their competitive season.

One of the major problems with soy is that it has become almost impossible to avoid. Virtually any time a product lists 'vegetable oil' as an ingredient, it means soybean oil. Chocolate and ice cream often contain lecithin, which is often made from soy. Textured vegetable protein is soy. Margarine and butter substitutes are made from soy. Most store-bought baked goods contain soy. Worcestershire sauce often contains soy. Peanut butter has soybean oil added. Even the words 'flavorings,' 'natural flavoring,' 'vegetable broth,' and 'vegetable starches' can mean soy.

That's really nothing new, Q. Any problems with soy would be a drop of water compared to the ocean of problems that is cow's milk.

Then there's sugar, aspartame, poultry, Splenda, child immunizations....

What is new is the way it is being forced into the food supply, and the way something positively harmful is being spun as something healthy. I could easily go a day without consuming any sugar, aspartame, poultry, or Splenda. Avoiding soy is much more difficult. Plus, soy has many other problems besides causing infertility. Did you look at mwdallas' link?

This seems like yet another health scare to me. The fact that they genetically modify crops like soya these days I find far more disconcerting.

Both of these processes (especially fermentation) remove some of the harmful substances from soy. They do not use soybean oil, or soy formula, or soy 'milk' in their diets. the facts of soy are true, but even to a lesser extent, than marijuana. Orientals are notoriously infertile and impotent. I bet I could eat soy every day for 10 years and still have some jammies swimming around LOL.

Soy has also been linked to brain atrophy. The data seem robust, too. Since I first read about it, I have strictly avoided soy. Also worth avoiding: hydrogenated fat. I actually had a dream several years ago: the FDA had new labelling rules -- hydrogenated oils had to be listed as "shit fat".
