Hugh,

It doesn't matter how many times he apologizes. Hannity and the other idiots will always call him "Robert 'KKK' Byrd. (while ignoring David "SDS" Horowitz's past)

A senator's shame .

They sure know how to gaffle a guy. And he has spent his life groveling. Not a pretty picture.

Oh...I wouldn't read too much into anything Senator Byrd says about the Klan back in way back...he likes to remind everyone about his role in the Klan and he has his only little way of doing it... :smartass:

One area where Byrd knows he blew it, and where he led West Virginians & White Americans down a blind alley, was Vietnam. If the Southern/Jeffersonian Democrats had opposed that waste of a war;everything would be quite different today.

This is mysterious to me. Why does Byrd like to remind people of his role?

To draw you a map...the voters in West Virginia have had no problem what-so-ever with Senator Byrd and the historical Klan...I would think this would be self evident...:wallbash:

Byrd has a good record on immigration compared to his third world loving critics. http://grades.betterimmigration.com/testgrades.php3?District=WV&VIPID=881

I see what you mean now. It is all ruined for me when he grovels to the media, and presumably the voters, over the fact.

Sertorius,

Sadly he is still a better man than most GOP Congressman.

Congressman regrets KKK connection The Associated Press Published on June 20, 2005

Sen. Robert C. Byrd's new memoir reveals both his encyclopedic knowledge of political history and the unlikely inspiration that helped launch his own political career: a Grand Dragon of the Ku Klux Klan.

It was a Klan leader who motivated the young Byrd during his short-lived tenure in the racist organization — something he writes was "an extraordinarily foolish mistake" that has haunted him for 40 years.

"It has emerged throughout my life to haunt and embarrass me, and has taught me in a very graphic way what one major mistake can do to one's life, career and reputation," the West Virginia Democrat says in an autobiography being released Monday [June 20]. "I displayed very bad judgment, due to immaturity and a lack of seasoned reasoning." ...

Even now, with the 2006 election more than 18 months away, Republicans are using it in their campaign to oust him. Byrd has not declared whether he will run again, and his book gives no hints.

I'm not convinced but I'd like to believe you. Anyway, I'll be out to DC in February for the American Renaissance conference and maybe I'll take a drive through West Virginie and get the feel of the place.
