WHEN I WAS 12 years old, I read the book Exodus by Leon Uris. I was thrilled with it and, looking back from a vantage point several decades later, I have often wondered why.
The book chronicles the sufferings of the Jewish people in Germany and Russia at the time of the Second World War. The characters are interesting, the plot intriguing, and the writing is first-rate.
However, I have learned some things since I read the book. Things about the Jews and the way they are portrayed. I am not nearly as favorable to them today.
But why did the book have such an appeal to me at that young age? I think the reasons are many, but two are particularly relevant:
1) The Jews are portrayed as "God's people." And the fact that they apparently did all these heroic deeds and overcame such odds proved to my young mind that they were indeed "God's Chosen." And I further thought "...of course, if there is such a thing as a people of God then . . . there is a God. He really does exist. Hooray -- and thank you, Jews!"
Don't dismiss this as merely the immature thoughts of a twelve-year-old. Zionist-influenced Evangelical Christians today operate under much the same rationale. Their synthetic faith is given specious substance by the "return" of the Jews to Palestine, in "fulfillment of Biblical prophecy," according to their interpretation. This psychologically "proves" to them that there is a God. There are no big-time miracles (or any other proofs of God) happening to the Christians, so they point to the Jews. The Jews, of course, are all too happy to receive this accolade. Just keep that money rolling in to Israel, the home of "God's Chosen."
2) Closely related to the first reason is the fact that the Christians are not permitted to act like men, but the Jews are. Christians are told to "turn the other cheek" and not "to oppose one who is evil." The Jews, however -- they are different. They can act like men. I think that many Christians are relieved to see that their "fellow seed of Abraham" are permitted to fight back, defend their families, and not be a doormat. Of course, the Jews have gone far beyond simple self-assertion and defense into aggression and murderous actions.
Those words, from the movie version of Exodus, are loaded. Just as loaded as the words in the book itself. But Leon Uris knew exactly what he was doing, portraying the Jews as suffering innocents, whose fat was made into soap, and whose skin was made into lampshades (perhaps, conversely, this myth "proved," to my young mind, that there really is a Devil). But that is what Jewish wordsmiths do. They load words with meanings, linking them to matters of psychological importance, such as religion, in the minds of their readers.
Yes, Gentiles have learned to do this also (see "The Battle Hymn of the Republic") -- but Jews are naturals.
I am much older and wiser now.

Yes Angeleyes, that was a Jewish Zionist movie where the bad guys were the Arabs and where the Mosad secret agent at the end of the movie saved the world and all the Arabs were killed.
Anyone here ever seen a movie where the Jews are the bad guys? I mean, those people are gansters, like little kids, runs whore houses, have the drug market, have the biggest web site for xxxxx, always laundoring money and yet no movie has ever been made about them, and don't forget that they control the extasie pill market.

The American Evangelicals were bad guys with the bomb too. Arabs a bit of both. The Sufi was good guy, and some reporter or archeologist was good guy. Not a movie, a book. Read it a few years ago.
Did they make it into a movie? If so, I can imagine what a Jewish producer in Hollywood would do with it.

A great 1959 book and 1962 movie. Soon after 9-11 there was a remake of the movie, what resulted was a dreadful movie, which blamed the house of Saud for a plot against America. How did they deal with title since Northeast Asia wasn't mentioned in the remake? They made Manchurian a name of an American oil company. I think, simply, the remake was rushed in production because original Condon novel read after 9-11 brings too many disturbing questions in the minds of readers. The original story has interesting elements, as relevant to more current events as to events in the 1950s. These elements include, a character acting on behalf of foreign powers for her own lust for power and influence under the guise of American patriotism; a Korean war ex-POW brainwashed by the Communists to act as an assassin; the use of a terrorist act by scheming American politicos to bring about a change in the domestic political status quo. The are a lot of parallels in the novel and events of 9-11, you can exchange Communist agents with Israeli art students and moving men; the Mossad for the KGB. With current perspective the novel is more disturbing in present than it was in the early 1960s.

I saw the recent Manchurian Candidate on DvD. shrugs Meryl Streep played well the bitch mother role Angela Landsbury had, but over all I much preferred the 1962 version, which I saw years ago in black and white. I was a bit disgusted by the incest plot device, it was classless and unnecessary for the plot line. Typical Hollywood; gratuitous deviance. :taz:
