Have you read [I]Fulcrum[/I], by Aleksander Zuyev? The autobiography of one of the only two Soviet pilots to defect to the west. In this case, a MiG-29 Fulcrum pilot who blazed over into Turkey in 1989.
I have a copy and haven't read it for some years, but Zuyev offers a somewhat more innocent and pedestrian "insider" view of what caused KAL 007.
