Israel's cabinet extended the law by a large majority

The Israeli cabinet has approved a 12-month extension to a controversial law that prevents Palestinians married to Arab Israelis from obtaining Israeli citizenship.

Government sources said on Sunday that the decision, which has to be ratified by parliament, was adopted by 16 votes to two at the weekly gathering of ministers.

Under the terms of the legislation, Palestinians from the West Bank or Gaza Strip are disqualified from gaining Israeli nationality through marriage.

The law also blocks the reunification of many families split between Israel and the occupied territories.

However, about 300 Palestinians will be able to claim citizenship to allow family reunification, said Interior Minister Ophir Pines, pointing out that the exception applies to Palestinian men over 35 and women over 25.

The law, which was first adopted by parliament in July 2003, has been denounced as racist by both Arab Israeli and left-wing MPs.

Jewish majority

"The issue here is whether we really want a situation where there is different legislation for different sectors of the public," Pines told Channel Two television, noting that Israel did not generally limit immigration rights to Israelis' spouses.

The government has defended the bill on the grounds that dozens of Israelis have been killed by Palestinians who gained citizenship and residency rights through marriage.

Justice Minister Tzippi Livni, who tabled the amendment, said limiting access by an estimated 1200 Palestinians from the West Bank and Gaza who are married to Israelis is a demographic as well as a security issue.

"There is nothing wrong with looking to safeguard Israel's Jewish majority by law," she told Channel One television.

Israeli Arabs see the law as discriminating against their community. While mostly sympathetic to a four and a half year-old Palestinian revolt against Israeli occupation, Israeli Arabs have rarely taken up arms themselves.

"There is nothing wrong with looking to safeguard Israel's Jewish majority by law," she told Channel One television.

I always enjoy it when articles about Israel's internal racial policies are published, and the Jews make statements similar to the one quoted above. She's right, of course--it only makes sense for a particular group to use its legal institutions to preserve itself. Americans used to understand that before the 1960s. I'm waiting for the day major politicians in America announce to the public, "there is nothing wrong with looking to safeguard America's European heritage by law."

While they promote multiculturalism and internationalism in the West, they insist that Israel remain a racially pure national enclave for Jews."

"MacDonald sees anti Semitism as the result of legitimate conflicts-of-interest. Yet Jewish organizations demonize anyone with the temerity to address Jewish power. They suppress the fact that Jewish-Christian rivalry has very deep roots in Western society."

Those people don't want to be freaking Jews but only Israeli citizens in order to be with their loves ones.

PA,

Why this is positively "racist". What ever happen to the belief of "we are all individuals?" that they are always telling us? What about "family reunification" that they espouse here?

I agree. Jewish hypocrisy on this issue to truly a sight to behold.

I'd like to hear what Abe Foxman has to say about this self-evident racial discrimination. What's good for the Jew is good for the Gentile.

The government has defended the bill on the grounds that dozens of Israelis have been killed by Palestinians who gained citizenship and residency rights through marriage. This smells like total BS. Let's see their government come up with some statistics to show this.

By the way, I wonder how many whites have been killed by blacks since the end of segregation, which Jews did quite a bit to bring about. Something tells me it's been more than dozens....

All too true!
"...Jewish organizations promote policies and ideologies aimed at undermining cultural cohesion while practising the opposite policies themselves.
