The Future Independence of Western Canada: Political evolution may mean separation.
by B.C. Anthony
To any Canadian not living in a cave for the last fifty years, it has become clear that Western and Eastern Canada have been evolving politically in opposite directions. One need only mention such issues as bilingualism, multiculturalism, gun control, same-sex marriage, and the fact that these issues are decided in the East where the votes are. Unlike the United States with its Senate, Canada has no means of counter-balancing the tyranny of numbers. So we are left with decisions made in the East shoved down our throats.
The current corruption in Ottawa carries with it the potential for an independent Western Canada. The next provincial election in Quebec could well see the separatists returned to power. That would result in another referendum on Quebec independence and, given the current climate in Quebec and the general disgust with federal politics, would almost certainly result in a YES for independence. At that point all options are on the table. It is unlikely that voters in the West would want to remain in a federal system dominated entirely by the interests of Toronto.
Western Canada is still predominantly White and conservative. An independent Western Canada would be a fresh start with an opportunity to establish a White controlled nation. There is a sufficient balance of political forces in Western Canada that we could establish a national, solvent, and independent economy while ensuring the social and economic rights of the workers without a "race to the bottom."
