500,000 Syria supporters rally in Lebanon Hezbollah organizes gathering to counter Lebanese opposition BEIRUT, Lebanon - Nearly 500,000 pro-Syrian protesters waved flags and chanted anti-American slogans in a central Beirut square Tuesday, answering a nationwide call by the militant Shiite Muslim Hezbollah group for a demonstration to counter weeks of rallies demanding Syrian forces leave Lebanon.
Organizers handed out Lebanese flags and directed the men and women to separate sections of Riad Solh Square. Loudspeakers blared militant songs urging resistance to foreign interference. Demonstrators held up pictures of Syrian President Bashar Assad and signs saying, ââ¬ÅSyria & Lebanon brothers forever.ââ¬Â
Other placards read: ââ¬ÅAmerica is the source of terrorismââ¬Â; ââ¬ÅAll our disasters are from Americaââ¬Â; ââ¬ÅNo to American-Zionist intervention; Yes to Lebanese-Syrian brotherhood.ââ¬Â
Black-clad Hezbollah guards handled security, lining the perimeter of the square and taking position on rooftops. Trained dogs sniffed for bombs.

Totally excellent developments.
I was just watching the BBC World News and the anchor woman says "100,000" people took part in the protest. When the scene was shown however, it looked more like 1,000,000 people. These pro-Syrian marches sure throw a monkey wrench into the Bush Freedom Machine.
