NB: The 1832 death count includes Gulf War I and other deaths of military personel in Iraq for the past decade or so.
And this figure is from 1/29/05. There have 57 U.S. military deaths in February, 2005.

Presumably this 1832 figure includes Desert Shield, Desert Storm and Enduring Freedom.

Looking at those stats I advise any parent with a kid wanting to part of the military to let their kid join the U.S. Navy proper. It appears to be the safest job in the world-- even in war! I imagine the U.S. Navy deaths listed are SEALs and navy medics working with Marine units. And if you're an officer in the Navy?!! All the women go for the Navy guys (in their faggoty whites uniforms), they live in beautiful historic areas like Annapolis or Alexandria, VA, and live out the dream of every boy-- ships, oceans, and women who look like Sean Young (watch "No Way Out" w/ Kevin Costner  ).

I'm no expert, but I understand that Iranians bought a large number of fancy-schmancy cruise missles from the Chinese, and that in the event of a war the Iranians might actually take out a ship or two.
I was in the Navy and served in the Persian Gulf, and all I can say is that would suck, and big time.

The usual response to that is that the range of those missiles -- about 200 miles -- means they have to get close enough first. Or wait until a ship gets close to shore.
In case of a military draft, if the designated enemy is Israel's enemy and not American one, the best is to move to another country. Comparing draft laws with other countries, Russian is a very lax one: if you sit it out until you are 27, you are home free. In some countries, they will remember your no-show forever.

Air Force is safe. The Air Force can bomb with impunity. Plus, you can leave and get a good job with a commercial airline.

Everything is only safe only as long as America's enemies stay weak. It doesn't have to be that way forever.

True, Navy roles outside of all out war are non-combat. But there's a lot more to it than that. Being aboard a ship is too much like a prison IMO.
