Peter Stuyvesant, the 17th century Governor of New Amsterdam, when requested to accept Jews into his infant colony declared that Jews: 'the deceitful race, such hateful enemies and blasphemers of the Name of Christ, be not allowed to further infect and trouble this new colony.'
Needless to say $$$$$ interests trumped religious zeal, and America ended up with Jew York City.
