I feel most sorry for the small government low tax type Republicans, who campaigned for Bush who's become a big government interventionist and a free handed spender, knowing in effect that they've wasted their time.

That's what I'm sayin'. The Bush Administration definitely held the carrot out in front of the cart when they decided to give the masses decisions on "moral issues" which simply diverted those voters away from the very anti-conservative policies of Bush & Company.
For all of Kerry's faults, he was very truthful about one thing: With George Bush you're gonna get more of the same.
