KKK distributes fliers at Concord

By Louis Short / Sun-Times Staff

The KKK is making its presence known in Cleburne County, whether citizens like it or not. Dozens of Concord, Wolf Bayou, and Almond residents woke a week ago Saturday to an unsolicited flier on their doorsteps, promoting the Ku Klux Klan. One flier reads, "Good news! The Knights of the Ku Klux Klan are organizing in Cleburne County." After talking with a few flier recipients, they say the news isn't good and they don't appreciate the gesture. Most have reported they threw the flier away. Another flier reads, "Attention citizens of Almond. The Knights of the Ku Klux Klan is offering you an alternative to the Democratic and Republican parties." The flier lists 10 items the KKK has on their agenda, including stopping all immigration into the U.S., abolishing the IRS, end affirmative action, and affirmation that America was founded as a white Christian nation and an end to anti-white propaganda. On the reverse side of one flier, recipients are given phone numbers to border patrol offices in Little Rock and Memphis. "This is the number to call when you see Mexicans They are illegal. They are not welcome here and are lawbreakers. These Mexicans need to be reported and you can help! It is your civic duty to your nation and countrymen," it reads. The flier looks like an official notice from the U.S. Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The fliers give a P.O. Box for persons to write instead of a physical address. There is no local phone number for contact information, but a number of the national director located in Harrison. There is also a web site listed to promote the party. One recipient said, "They did this late at night. There are a lot of old people around here that get scared when people pull up at night. If they're going to distribute anything, they need to do it face to face instead of sneaking around." Charles Norton, a Justice of the Peace for the Concord area, is aware of the fliers. "I don't appreciate it very much," he said. "In our community there is not much sympathy for the KKK. They are negative and I don't like it a bit in the world. They are not changing anybody's mind. There is no sympathy. It's real unfortunate for one or two people in the community to be able to do this. We would rather be left alone." Concord Mayor Charles Jameson is aware of the distribution too. "I've known for several months there is a racial thing going on in Concord," he said. "I have not paid a lot of attention to it. I did not think it would involve national organization. "I know citizens were surprised at the recent literature. It does not surprise me it was done the way it was, in the dark," Jameson said. "That's not good. They know they couldn't put them in mailboxes because it is illegal," the mayor added. "It's subversive to the laws of the state if they advertise. Since it was done in the dark, people should see right through it. The fliers need to go in the trash. I have no respect for the KKK. I think it needs to be banned. Any discrimination is wrong." "There are too many wrongdoers who want things legalized. I have completely negative feelings to the organization. I don't want to make enemies over this." "I definitely think it's wrong. This is getting too close to home. I wish it would go away and stop," said Jameson. "I was born and raised in a completely white community, but I was never taught to be a racial bigot and don't want any part of it." There were approximately four different fliers distributed late Friday night, according to the Cleburne County Sheriff's Department. "We are aware of the fliers," said Cleburne County Sheriff Dudley Lemon. The Country Kitchen restaurant in Concord has KKK contact cards available for any patron to pick up. Richard Hensley, whose family owns the restaurant, said he knows who put the cards on the counter. "I put them there," he said. "I believe in the platform of the Knights. The political platform." "The Knights aim to lobby for the white people," said Hensley. "There are no lobby groups for white people. There are all kinds of lobby groups that are well funded, but none for whites. There is no violence involved with what we are doing. It is strictly political." "This is not something new to Cleburne County," he said. "The KKK has been in the county for many years. In chapter six of the "Time and the River" it talks about the KKK in the county." "We're not into burning crosses, that is stupid and illegal and will get you thrown in prison. We want people to wake up and do something for the white people. Whatever is done will be in a legal fashion. There will be no violence or other crap. This is an alternative to what else is being offered." "There is nothing illegal about what they're doing. It's just propaganda. They haven't crossed the line yet," said Lemon. "On their web site they list a section of local police. Of course, I'm listed. None of us (police) are associated with this group. They seem to want to provide a community service by telling people what law enforcement there is in the county and how to contact them. They are interjecting their ideas and listing police contacts. We have nothing to do with them. I am not in support of the KKK." Detective Dennis Norton, who is handling the reports, said, "We are aware of the distribution of the fliers. As far as we know, they have not done anything illegal." All information gathered by the Sheriff's Department is being turned over to the Arkansas State Police and the FBI. "We just want them to be aware of what's going on," Lemon said.

Wow. The responses to the flyers are like Pavlov's dog. Which goes to my earlier objection about using the name KKK.

Mr Hensley calls it straight. Good man, I say. I'm surprised the jewish editor left his quotes as they were in the article.

The Jewish editor no doubt that the comments were self-convicting of hateful, racial supremacy.

im not really suprised at the response, just wait a few years till the negroes, mexican or hindus are running their city council, raising the property taxes to pay for "less fortunate" school districts, or getting huge tax subsides from the city or state...then lets see how they feel. If that doesnt work, maybe, just maybe they might wake up and smell the jerry-curl grease as their daughters come home with a buck ni&&er, proclaiming "hey daddy, meet my new boyfriend".

Some White folks, even as the injuns are about to lift their scalp, will cry "cant we all just get along?"

If the klan reached 2 out of 100, it was worth it.

fwiw - im not associated with the klan, but you might as well call me a supporter

That should have stated Chapter 12 of the book titled "TIME and the RIVER" , by Evalena Berry. The title of Chapter 12 is "The Turbulent Life of the M&NA"

The M&NA is the name of the railroad that went through Cleburne County up until the 1950's. Now there are only sections of bed that are still visible. Most of the railbed is under Greers Ferry Lake now.
