I've always thought about doing this, convinced that I have something to offer above and beyond what's already out there. Well, maybe, maybe not. But how does one get started on this? I don't know HTML. I have a good computer with Windows XP and a fast connection. That's about it. Basically what I'd like is

To the extent possible, I'd like to do it anonymously, though I think at some point, you have to register as "owner" of the domain, no? Which people can find out?

Hello Hugh,

To do it right, you need to register a domain name at some place like GoDaddy or you can do it through most hosting companies. You do have to put in some kind of contact name and address when you register a domain, but there are ways to get around revealing anything personal such as PO Boxes and names like "Site Administrator", "Technical Advisor", etc. I've never heard of anyone having any problems doing that kind of thing and I know I haven't.

A critical factor is your choice of a hosting company. There's lots out there that are cheap and with a blog you shouldn't really worry about server resources and such, as opposed to an active forum which really taxes a server. What you may want to do is do a google on hosting companies and free blog programs like movable type, Pmachine, etc. A good number of hosting companies sell their hosting packages with these already installed and ready to run. Literally all you need to do is start inputting data. You should be able to find a host with all this and more well under $10.00 a month. The domain name should run you about 10 or 15 dollars a year. That's it. I should add that there are free blogs and space deals out there, but in my experience you'll be happier in the long run if you pay a little money to make it look professional.

Please let me know if you need anything further and I'll do my best to help. Good luck.
