JOHN KERRY'S WAR RECORD

Swift boat skipper: Kerry critics wrong Tribune editor breaks long silence on Kerry record; fought in disputed battle

By Tim Jones Tribune national correspondent Published August 21, 2004

The commander of a Navy swift boat who served alongside Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry during the Vietnam War stepped forward Saturday to dispute attacks challenging Kerry's integrity and war record.

William Rood, an editor on the Chicago Tribune's metropolitan desk, said he broke 35 years of silence about the Feb. 28, 1969, mission that resulted in Kerry's receiving a Silver Star because recent portrayals of Kerry's actions published in the best-selling book "Unfit for Command" are wrong and smear the reputations of veterans who served with Kerry.

Rood, who commanded one of three swift boats during that 1969 mission, said Kerry came under rocket and automatic weapons fire from Viet Cong forces and that Kerry devised an aggressive attack strategy that was praised by their superiors. He called allegations that Kerry's accomplishments were "overblown" untrue.

"The critics have taken pains to say they're not trying to cast doubts on the merit of what others did, but their version of events has splashed doubt on all of us. It's gotten harder and harder for those of us who were there to listen to accounts we know to be untrue, especially when they come from people who were not there," Rood said in a 1,700-word first-person account published in Sunday's Tribune.

Rood's recollection of what happened on that day at the southern tip of South Vietnam was backed by key military documents, including his citation for a Bronze Star he earned in the battle and a glowing after-action report written by the Navy captain who commanded his and Kerry's task force, who is now a critic of the Democratic candidate.

Rood's previously untold story and the .....................

Rood, who commanded one of three swift boats during that 1969 mission,... Rood's previously untold story...[/QUOTE]

Here are the pertinent points to ponder:

1) "Tribune editor breaks long silence"

2) "Rood, who commanded one of three swift boats during that 1969 mission"

Rood is a NEWSPAPER EDITOR. Given this fact one has a better than 95% chance to be correct in predicting that Rood is a LIBERAL political supporter of the Democrat agenda, and one who for DEEP FELT BELIEFS would be willing to lie, cheat and smear the past to help elect Kerry as the next president of the USA.

Note that three swift boats were involved in the silver star mission and only two of the three boat commanders, Kerry and Rood, survived the war. Lt. j.g. Donald Droz was killed in action six weeks later was the commanding officer of the 3rd swift boat. If Rood is lying about this incident do you think Kerry is going to contradict him?

The Rood story stinks to high heaven.

Ed Toner,

Great Post! I never have thought much of the charges made about Kerry's War record, they have no proof of any of it.

And just just look at what Bushie was was doing at that time.

Bush never claimed to be any kind of war hero; as a matter of fact he has never really brought the subject up. Why do you attack him as though he were a fraud on something where he never claimed anything?! While Bush never claimed to have been a war hero, Kerry claimed that he was a war hero, but vilified everyone else in the service…he basically made it out like he was the only decent man in the whole service, painting the rest of the vets like murderers, rapists and all other sorts of scum.

The Swift Boat Veterans for Truth are sincere white guys, and I don’t think our people should join with the jewish media in calling their intentions wrong and evil…what is this, but crucifying Vietnam vets all over again, like Kerry and the jewish media did many years ago? And why are we doing it? Because they had the gumption to make a stand against Kosher Kerry, as they knew he would be bad for this country. These guys are all true, white, American heroes. I am proud of these guys, and they are exactly the kind of men that deserve our support against the jewish media onslaught … We should not be taking up the enemy’s cross, in order to crucify these men again! Kerry did it once…do we need to do it again?! I don’t think so…We should STAND WITH OUR OWN! I say to you, again: he never claimed to be any kind of a hero…he never publicly lied about and slandered his comrades in the National Guards. He wasn’t in the war, but that doesn’t mean he was dishonest about it!
