Roger Waters launches 'The Writings on the Wall campaign

____ On the 8th of July, one day before the International Court of Justice ruled the Israeli wall illegal under international law, Roger Waters, ex-member of super group Pink Floyd, launched ‘the Writings on the Wall’ campaign with his most famous line “we don’t need no thought control” scribbled under his signature. From Glastonbury festival to Parliament Square, radical anti-poverty charity ,'War on Want, has asked stars of stage and soap box to voice their protest at the construction of Israel’s Separation Wall, by graffiti-ing their names on a 24-foot model of the real thing. Other launch signatories include Mayor of London Ken Livingstone, a host of MPs including former Foreign Secretary Robin Cook, and stars including Jerry Dammers (The Specials), Shane MacGowan (The Pogues), Damien Rice, Kosheen and Billy Bragg. Roger Waters, said of the wall “The poverty inflicted by the wall has been devastating for Palestinians. It has kept children from their schools, the sick from proper medical care and continues to destroy the Palestinian economy. I fully support War on Want’s campaign, and hope that as many people as possible sign the wall – as a strong message to the UK government that immediate action is essential.” John Coventry, Media Officer at War on Want said, “The aim of the campaign is to bring this issue to the front of people’s minds. We hope that this media friendly campaign can really bring home the hardship faced by millions of Palestinians. We are thrilled to have Roger on board.” Roger, who wrote the song “Another Brick in The Wall”, is the first of many musicians, poets, comedians and actors to sign an 8 ft tall mock up of the wall, which will travel round the country and be presented to the UK government as a petition. More details on this very worthy campaign and how you can get involved can be found here. Many thanks to Mark for details and photo.

Man, I use to love Pink Floyd, especially their old stuff. When I was feeling depressed, I'd drug myself and slide in a Floyd CD. Oh, those crazy teenage days.

Anyway, the wall Israel is building is an object for Isreal's critics to focus on. This is doing more harm to Isreal's world standing than any heavy handed assault on Palestinians has ever done.
