**Catholic Church equates anti-Zionism with anti-Semitism **

By Shlomo Shamir, Haaretz Correspondent

The Catholic Church condemned anti-Zionism as a cover for anti-Semitism by means of a joint statement issued by a forum of Catholic-Jewish intellectuals this week.

The announcement was made at a gathering of religious, academic and other leading Jewish and Catholic figures in Buenos Aires.

"We oppose anti-Semitism in any way and form, including anti-Zionism that has become of late a manifestation of anti-Semitism," the statement said.

This is the first time that anti-Zionism and anti-Semitism have been equated by the Catholic Church.

The statement also includes a stern condemnation of terrorism, particularly terror in the name of faith.

"Terror is a sin against man and against God. Fundamentalist terrorism in the name of God has no justification and cannot be justified."

Ilan Steinberg, director of the World Jewish Congress, one of the forum's organizers, described the joint statement as "an historic moment."

"For the first time, the Catholic Church recognizes in anti-Zionism an attack not only against Jews, but against the whole Jewish people."

Senior Jewish figures called the announcement a significant, public statement of support by the Catholic Church in the face of anti-Zionism.

"In the past, Zionism was equated with racism, and this statement turns anti-Zionism statements to a form of racism," a Jewish leader said in New York.

The statement joins a prior European Union announcement and UN declaration of war against anti-Semitism as part of a global front fighting the scourge.

'The Tradition' just ain't what it used to be....

Sorry, this was too good a cheap shot to pass up. Of course, one might very well argue that the Church will return to 'the Tradition' long after John Paul is choking on dust six feet under.

Still, that's not where I'd put my money.... Once the 3rd worlders take over the R. Church, they will support lots of 'traditional' anti-birth control views (which Western Catholic will ignore), along with supposedly 'traditional' committments to 'social justice'--in the form of pretty much open borders.

But really folks.....

You would have to be an anti-semite to think that the jews have any influence in worldly affairs.

It's not clear to me from whom this statement came. What "gathering" are they referring to? Why is it coming out of South America and not Rome?

The Vatican did not even diplomatically recognize Israel prior to the current pontificate. Another disaster for which we have JPII to thank.
The announcement was made at a gathering of religious, academic and other leading Jewish and Catholic figures in Buenos Aires.

It is hardly accurate to equate a statement issued by a 'gathering of religious, academic, and other leading Jewish and Catholic figures in Buenos Aires' as being an official position statement of the Catholic Church.

I know the glee it provides to attack 'Tradition,' but it simply doesn't apply here. I could point to innumerable Zionist statements by Pat Robertson, and then say "Protestants Equate Ant-Zionism with Anti-Semitism,' but it would be incorrect, since I know that he does not speak for all Protestants. In the same way, 'a gathering of religious, academic, and other leading Jewish and Catholic figures in Buenos Aires' does not speak for the Catholic Church.

I find it unfortunate that it was necessary for me to point this out.

Good point. Who cares what a bunch of yahoos in Argentina think anyway?

I should add that I'm all for Zionism - if that means all Jews leaving America (and wherever else) and moving to Isreal.

That's what they say it means, and boy oh boy am I ever behind that idea.

Ariel Sharon and I are of one mind on that score.

In fact, I think it's such a swell idea I'll personally pay for one-way business class tickets Reagan International - Tel Aviv for Wolfowitz and his immediate family!

(provided of course that they renounce their American citizenship - that's the catch).

Our Motto - Aliyah Today!

I think the assumption here is that my statements about the Catholic church were based on belief in the truth of the Israeli report. Not quite textually accurate.... If you are going to start worrying about such matters.

Also, I'd appreciate some links to Robertson's alleged equation of anti-Zionism with anti-Semitism, if that was meant as more than a hypothetically hypothetical example.

Christianity by definition is anti-zionist (in terms of so-called Jews). Once again, Christianity takes the backseat to Political Correctness.
