Reservist Arrested After Wife's Body Found
VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) - An Army reservist who returned from Iraq several months ago was arrested after police found his wife's body in a van near the couple's apartment.
Matthew James Denni was arrested Saturday as he camped along the Washougal River, east of Vancouver.
The body of 37-year-old Kimberly Faye Denni was found in a military footlocker stashed in a van in Battle Ground, about 10 miles north of Vancouver. She died of a gunshot wound to the neck, Police Chief Ronald H. Johnson said.
An acquaintance told investigators last month that friends and relatives had not seen or heard from Kim Denni in two months. Denni told authorities that his wife was with friends and had spoken with him only by telephone, police said.
Denni, 38, was jailed on $250,000 bond for investigation of first-degree murder. He returned from Iraq in February after a year overseas with the 671st Engineer Company, based in Portland, Ore. The unit's work included bridge building in Baghdad.
Denni's landlord reported a foul odor coming from the couple's apartment last week. Investigators obtained a search warrant and later found the body in the van, Clark County sheriff's Sgt. David Trimble said.
The marriage was troubled and there was no immediate indication that wartime stress was involved in the death, Trimble said. The military beefed up its postwar counseling programs after three soldiers from commando units at Fort Bragg, N.C., were accused of killing their wives in the summer of 2002 after returning from Afghanistan.
The couple's daughter was in the custody of Child Protective Services.
Denni was scheduled to be arraigned June 10.
