There's been some discussion here or elsewhere recently on the question of the bible and polygamy. Let me refer anyone to the encyclical "Arcanum" of Leo XIII (1880).

They don't make Popes like him anymore. Note in particular the clarity of language. By the way, it's somewhat lengthy, but the discussion of polygamy comes early on.
