Right. It was Mandatory Monkey Champion time yet again. I paid zero attention to this go-round; fruity Clay Aiken's shafting in favor of Ruben the Crap-Hued Elephant Seal was more than enough for me.

Have never watched a nanosecond of this zoo-animal talent show but then again I don't have to - reading the NY POST is like thumbing through the print edition of FOX Broadcasting.
I did notice, over the past few weeks, a great hue and cry in said fishwrap that the public was picking the 'wrong' IDOL semifinalists; that is to say, the white contestants. Even by the sulfur-pit standards of today's America, this was a eye-watering blast of stench.
Here is a show in which "America decides", via phone-poll I assume, who their favorites are. Yet if they choose to select whites over nonwhites, something is very wrong - wrong enough to warrant newspaper coverage. One IDOL staffer was quoted in these articles as saying, "It just goes to show how far we still have to go to truly be a color-blind society."
Most people would chuckle sadly at this and move on to the next headless body in topless bar (well, it [I]is [/I] the NY POST) but I sit transfixed by items like this. Now even something as fundamentally unserious as a pop-music phone-in poll is grist for the social scientists, who begin with the verdict and work backwards from there. Even to devote column-inches to this is outrageous, but apparently it worked: the 'right' sort of person won the IDOL competition in the end. [I]Mission accomplished:[/I] we boosted the Nielsen numbers [I]and [/I] the ni**er won. Gentlemen, it's Mogen David Time!
We have had it all wrong. On forums like this, we kid ourselves that national politics and world affairs [I]matter [/I] and warrant serious (and endless) discussion, while the nonstop media-fluff that litters every inch of our reality like cultural confetti gets waved away with a contemptuous hand-gesture.
But politics and world affairs are now the unserious fluff; it's the media, the debased and controlled flow of information, upon which the very future of the world hangs. You'll never 'convert' Joe Sixpack and Sally Soccermom with Chicken Little warnings about politicians and think-tanks. Because you can depose and replace every last elected official and policy wonk yet Joe and Sally fundamentally and intuitively know that nothing at all will change except to get a little worse; the task is to make them confront where that intuition comes from, and maybe discover [I]how [/I] they know what they 'know'.
And you can only interrupt the flow of the ambient soma they're absorbing 24 hours a day by first making them aware that, like the dishwashing-liquid commercials used to say, "you're soaking in it".

Thankfully I don't watch TV anymore, and I am not planning to pay for televitz propaganda ever again.
