As you might imagine, Jewish involvement in the attempted communization of Spain was heavy, and that involvement is always understated by leftist historians who insist that 'only about 20% of the communists in Spain at that time were Jews.' True, if they refer to the top-ranking 20% of the anti-Franco faction and not to simple footsoldiers. However, since some Jews did not use their real names when they served in the Spanish Civil War it is difficult to say exactly how many Jews fought in Spain from 1936-1939.
Of course that 20% doesn't mean a lot. With the exception of Brig. Gen. Karpinski, how many soldiers in Iraq are Jewish? It certainly doesn't mean no jewish interests are involved.
Conservative Catholics have always been bitter about the Spanish Republicans. Its always a good talking point with them, provided one can demonstrate the credibility of your own rapport and friendliness toward Catholics and he Church. Unlike Linder et.al.
