These hate crimes and incidents are gathered from news reports. Some incidents happened within campus boundaries; others happened in adjoining communities. All, however, affected the campus in one way or another.

At Diablo Valley Community College in California, fascist slogans, swastikas and other white supremacist symbols were written in bathroom stalls and on other walls around campus.

At Dartmouth College, several fraternities and sororities threw a "Ghetto" party, where white students dressed as urban African Americans, and a sorority held a "slave" auction as a fund-raising event.

At the University of Southern Mississippi, a group of white men shouted racial slurs and attacked four black men after a football game.

At the University of California, Berkeley, someone spray-painted a swastika and a white supremacist symbol on the sign of an African American theme house.

At Olivet College in Michigan, 51 of 55 African American students quit the school after a spate of racial violence and harassment.

At Santa Rosa Junior College in California, an editorial page column attacking Jews set off a firestorm of protests resulting in death threats against the editor, derogatory letters to Jewish professors, and the shutting down of an online chat room taken over by white supremacists.

At Colorado State University, in the midst of national publicity about the Matthew Shepard attack in Wyoming, a fraternity built a parade float depicting a scarecrow tied to a fence and bearing the words, "I'm gay" and "Up my ass."

At Penn State, an African American student leader received an unsigned letter: "This is a white academy in a white town ... in a white country and by God it's going to stay that way, nigger bitch."

"Of all crimes, hate crimes are most likely to create or exacerbate tensions, which can trigger larger community wide racial conflict, civil disturbances and even riots," said report by the U.S. Department of Justice.

After all the instances I've seen in which crimes against whites are not treated as "hate crimes", but only crimes against designated victim groups, not to mention the many, many cases of "hate crimes" actually being hoaxes perpetrated by the "victims" themselves, plus the extremely, uh, "flexible" definition of a "hate crime" in this article (white kids dressing as urban blacks?), there is absolutely no way I am going to get worked up over this.

The vast majority of the so-called "hate crimes" (all the ones I quoted above) are not criminal acts at all, but rather Constitutionally-protected expressions of free speech (admittedly, the Constitution has been a dead letter since 1861, but it does retain some moral authority). The single exception were the terrorist threats (see section 422 of the California Penal Code) made against the editor of a college newspaper for his decision to publish an article critical of Israel. Presumably, the unprosecuted criminals in this instance were Jews.

The ghetto party if anything, is the result of white kids stripped of their heritage trying to ape negro behavior in order to think they are 'cool' or 'funny.' This is not a hate crime, it is the result of low white self-esteem. Likewise the slave auction was probably designed to make white kids wallow in their guilt.

As for the Junior college, you can read the whole story here:

It was obviously not a hate crime either.

That's exactly right. The only potential crime I saw there was the "death threats" one.

The rest was well within the first amendment.

I disagree that the whole Constitution is a dead letter, but we're definitely moving in that direction. As it is though, I doubt that any of those (other than the death threats) would even be charged, much less tried.
