[font=Verdana][size=2]Most people are under the impression that the northern states in the War Between the States were completely unified and committed to their subjugation of the South. Those who have heard of the fighting in New York during the war think of it as a relatively minor event, since it is simply called "The Draft Riot." This conjures images of a few treasonous people skirmishing with a few patriotic police, maybe breaking a few windows, and not much more. The truth is far more interesting. In fact, the so-called "Draft Riot" was not a riot at all, but a full-scale military insurrection by the people of the state of New York which lasted 4 days and had almost as many casualties as Gettysburg. Not only was this revolt brutally crushed by Mr Lincoln, but New York was placed under military rule for the remainder of the war, and even after.
