I can't say this suprises me, but it does bring up a couple of thoughts. The theory that Indians came over the Bering Straight during an ice age is looking more and more flimsy. The oldest (and most advanced) native settlements in the Americas are in the South. So Aztecs, Mayans, Incas, etc did not trek southwards through California and the Western US to get to Mexico and South America. It is possible that they came to America on boats across the Pacific. Therefore, Mexicans who are descendents of Aztecs have no more legitimate claim to California than any other American.
Also the various Pomo and Miwok tribes native to California are no relation to Mexicans. It is despicable that Mexican activists will complain and whine about how "ignorant" Americans are about the complexities of Mexican culture, but then they will use that very ignorance to their own advantage when it suits their purpose. Mexicans are not equal to the Indians of California; Mexicans are not taking California "back", they are merely taking California.
The yaqui wars and the Chiapas uprising show Mexicans do not consider Indians their own people. Mexicans have always treated Indians like dirt, for them to claim that land that was taken away from Indians was therefore taken from Mexicans is the heighth of arrogance. There was not a large number of Mexicans in California when Californians independently revolted against the corrupt Mexican government.
And as far as I know the vast majority of native peoples were destroyed by diseases the white race brought, diseases which the white race had picked up after centuries of forced migrations into crowded conditions in Europe as whites were chased out of central Asia by hordes of Mongols and other warlike asiatics. What goes around comes around.
