The Reverend Doctor Street Avenue Boulevard Junior
I'll preface this meditation with an explanation: each year around this time every Republican with a typewriter finds his liver moved to write something about The Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King Junior The First. Those who appear most enthusiastic - indeed, they seem to look forward to it like children look forward to the Hot d'Or Adult Film Awards - are those Conservative White Men who are regularly cursed as "Fascists" and "Racists".
That these fellows have the limitless respect for Dr. Very Special K. that they boast is as disingenuous as a "Goback Kerry" Speech without the F-Word. I believe these MLK panegyrics are nothing but futile ounces-of-prevention and are as dishonest as the Shell Oil commercials finally shedding their modesty and confessing that the environment is the firm's real bottom line. The MLK blandishments are not only destructive because they are lies, they are destructive because they are pandery and mark an unnecessary retreat and re-digging of your trenches a full league inside your own lines. Pandery is undignified, it's cowardly, and it's confusing. Moreover, it is contrary to the Third Amendment to the Moresby Constitution: Don't Feed The Dog At The Table.
Every year I read these Celebrations of The Dream and I always find myself leaning back in my chair and scratching my head. I cannot figure it out. I am old ............................................
