I think Mair is right, that the Uiguars killed of most of these people. Everything I've read about them points towards a brutal and degenerate culture.

People make far too much of nazi considering everyone else inferior and despising them. There were thousands of Mongolians and Turks who volunteered and were gladly accepted into the ranks of the SS.
Ghengis Khan, BTW had red hair and green eyes, showing that in some cases these people were assimilated into local populations.
If there's any more current research on these people, I would be grateful for it. It seems something of a lull in published material in the last couple years.
