San Francisco bay area congressman Tom Lantos is apparently facing a primary challenge from an upstart Arab candidate, and the Freepers don't like it one bit:

Question: whom would Freepers choose in a hypthetical matchup between socialist Tom Lantos and non-socialist Dana Rohrbacher?

Along the same lines, the FReepers gush with praise for that great "conservative Constitutionalist" Alan Dershowitz

Most of the freepers on that thread are brain dead. The only differences between a slimeball like Lantos and Madd is that Lantos supports the war for Jews and oil and the "Patriot Act." In the other areas I can't see how he differs from Lantos. I hope the Arab wins, not because I think that he will do anything of benefit for this country, but because he will not put Israel first.

I think the whole board is hugely disproportionately Jewish, and I'm also beginning to think that it's disproportionately non-White. I see a lot of members over there who admit to being black, latino, asian or mixed, especially on the race issues threads. I'd love to see an ethnic breakdown, to see how many White gentiles are left after all the purges. And most of those remaining are probably White females who go there for the throne-sniffing threads.

My understanding (I live just outside of Lantos' district, so I've been following this story as closely as the scant coverage permits) is that Maad Abu-Ghazali, who was the Libertarian candidate against Lantos in 2002, is running as the LP candidate again in 2004. Lantos does have a Democratic primary challenge, however, from Ro Khanna (since they both have foreign names, and identical views from the Likudnik perspective, the Freepers presumably got them confused). I think Mr. Khanna is actually from India and, like Maad, opposes the war in Iraq, the "Patriot Act," etc. I've actually seen a few "Ro Khanna for Congress" bumperstickers around town and none from Lantos; a LOT of Democrats think its time for Mr. Lantos to retire (the Iraq War, or, for that matter, the Kosovo War, are not popular here in the Bay Area) but when the votes of the senile and the lazily ignorant are counted, I doubt there will be enough dissenters to constitute a majority, alas.
