By DEBORAH KONG

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Advocates are asking Hispanics throughout California to refuse to go to schools, work or stores Friday in response to the repeal of a law that would have allowed undocumented immigrants to get driver's licenses.

Latino and immigrant communities don't have to roll over,'' said Edward Headington, a spokesman for the Mexican American Political Association, one of two groups organizing the protest. There is strength in numbers.''

At 11.9 million, Hispanics make up about a third of the state's population. California, home to the nation's largest Hispanic community, has been the scene of a series of divisive battles over immigration.

Headington said he did not know how many people would participate in Friday's general strike, but acknowledged its effect would be spotty. Organizers have distributed at least 350,000 fliers during the past month urging people to join the effort, he said.

Some, however, have expressed reservations about the protest. Xavier Reyes, communications and education director at the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles, said his group supports the goal of the strike but is worried about workers.

``Our concern is the folks that are going to leave their jobs and may not be able to come back to their jobs. There's basically no safety net for those people,'' Reyes said.

Reyes said he's unsure what impact the protest will have.

If we had a population that was totally homogeneous, there might be some significant showing,'' he said. Butwe're not one homogeneous group that's marching in the same direction every time.''

The strike, which coincides with the feast day of the Virgin of Guadalupe, Mexico's patron saint, will remind legislators that the driver's license issue has not been forgotten, Headington said.

It's a matter of ``respect and dignity for people who are hardworking and responsible and who need a license to drive to work, to drive their kids to school and to go shopping,'' he said.

The driver's license law was passed by the Legislature in September and signed by then-Gov. Gray Davis, fueling criticism he was pandering to Hispanic voters. Fulfilling a major campaign promise from the recall election, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger last week signed a measure repealing the law, which would have taken effect Jan. 1.

This sounds great to me. For one day, what normal Californians are left (if any) will be able to enjoy a day free of Mexcrement in their schools, stores, and workplaces. This works along the same lines as back when the NAACP boycotted South Carolina--their absence made the state a better place. Is there any way these Aztlaners can make their boycott permanent?

It's a matter of ``respect and dignity for people who are hardworking and responsible and who need a license to drive to work, to drive their kids to school and to go shopping,'' he said.

The key point that's being missed here is that these people should be driving and shopping back in their own country.

Sally ShoppingMall: "How dare the state of California deny innocent undocumented workers driver's licenses! Isn't America supposed to be a melting pot of Blacks, Browns, Yellows and homosexuals? Such intolerance! Well, it's a good thing that my favorite Senator, Stan Feldbergsteinwitz, is introducing federal legislation to allow all humans, regardless of resident status, to drive anywhere in America! Aren't we all human beings, equal regardless of skin color? My favorite Black TV talk-show host, Rhonda Rehima ShaWanda LaShirley Jones, says that America was designed to be racially diverse from the very start. Don't you think George Washington would agree?"

Nope. :shocking:

Latino Boycott Closes Some Businesses

Some California Latinos staged a statewide economic boycott Friday to protest the repeal of the law that would have allowed illegal immigrants to get driver's licenses.

It was difficult to tell how widespread the one-day boycott was. But several hundred people took to the streets of downtown San Jose Friday morning in support of the driver's license bill.

Activists had asked Latinos not to go to school or work or patronize any businesses. A check of San Jose's downtown showed that some small businesses that cater to a Latino clientele were closed for the day. Others reported a drop-off in customers.

"We're really affected," said jewelry store owner Luis Romo. "We need business, especially in downtown... it's terrible."

Activists say they may plan more one-day boycotts if there's no movement on the driver's license issue.

Like the N.A.A.C.P. boycotts, these hurt their own kind worse than they do us. Hell, I wish they would shut Doraville down! (formerly a small GA. town, now 50% Mexican)
