Ambulance hijackers shoot patient in the head

Hijackers commandeered an ambulance on Friday and shot dead a patient who was being transported to a hospital before ditching the vehicle, a police official said.
Kwazulu-Natal provincial police spokesperson Vish Naidoo said the ambulance was dispatched to pick up a man suffering gunshot wounds after a robbery attempt at a shop in Umlazi, about 30kms from Durban.
On its way back, the ambulance was hijacked by five armed men who forced the driver and the paramedic out and made off with the vehicle. The ambulance was later found abandoned with the patient killed by a gunshot to the head, Naidoo said.
South Africa is regularly shaken by shocking crime stories, although police say they are making headway against the country's sky-high crime rate.
An unemployment rate of 30 percent and wide income disparities are blamed for the wave of murders, rapes and hijackings, which deters foreign investors and makes South Africa one of the world's most dangerous places to live.
