OK I'm trying to track down one of the perhaps oldest urban legends, the "PJF" stamped on bars of soap in WWII Germany one. Of course we're all taught that PJF stood for "Pure Jewish Fat" but I heard somewhere that PJF was a manufacturer, and it was that manufacturer's initials.

Anyone have any insight on this?

It's about like my buddies and I saying the P&K Burger up the street uses Puppies and Kittens, which we used to get a real laugh out of, but that does not make it true.

So let's put another urban legand to rest!

Check out Mark Weber's article Jewish Soap in The Journal of Historical Review, Vol. 11, No. 2.

The "RIF" soap bar initials that supposedly stood for "Pure Jewish Fat" actually indicated nothing more sinister than "Reich Center for Industrial Fat Provisioning" ("Reichsstelle fr Industrielle Fettversorgung"), a German agency responsible for wartime production and distribution of soap and washing products. RIF soap was a poor quality substitute that contained no fat at all, human or otherwise.
