FRENCH EXTREMEE-RIGHT LEADER WANTS UNITY AHEAD OF EUROPEAN ELECTIONS
BUDAPEST, Oct 23 (AFP) - French extreme-right leader Jean-Marie Le Pen on Thursday called on Europe's political far right to unite ahead of the June 2004 European parliamentary elections to save what he called "the Europe of independent nations." Le Pen, leader of the France's xenophobic National Front (FN), was the guest speaker of the far-right Hungarian Justice and Life Party (MIEP) at a ceremony marking the 47th anniversary of the failed 1956 Hungarian uprising against Soviet occupation. "The real patriots of all the nations must unite in the European parliament to put an end to this drifting," said Le Pen in a speech to 3,000 cheering nationalist supporters. "Let us unite to save the Europe of independent and democratic nations." Le Pen warned the supporters of MIEP, the only Hungarian party that opposed joining the European Union in an April referendum, that Budapest would lose its sovereignty once it enters the EU in May 2004. "Be wary of the European mirage, which strongly resembles the prison of the people you decided to leave behind 10 years ago," Le Pen said in reference to Hungary's transition to democracy in 1989 after more than four decades of communist rule. "You will lose your freedom and your soul," Le Pen said, adding that for the French now, "60 percent of the laws are made in Brussels and not in Paris."
