Well there was a topic here about members names and why they chose them. Well here's one that deals with another aspect of membership on this forum.
What/who is your avatar, and why did you pick it as your avatar?
My avatar is a portrait of the Russian poet Mikhail Lermontov(1814-1841). He's one of my personal favorite poets, and he is the second greatest Russian poet(after Alexander Pushkin), and is an important cultural icon to Russians. So Lermontov has both personal and ethnic pride meaning to me.
The portrait I used for my avatar can be viewed here http://www.ocf.berkeley.edu/~leong/Russkaya%20Literatura/Mikhail%20Yurevich%20Lermontov.htm
and why this particular portrait? Well it's always been my favorite picture of him in his hussar uniform.
For more info on Lermontov's life, www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mikhail_Lermontov
Here's where you can read some of Lermontov's poems http://www.poetryloverspage.com/poets/lermontov/lermontov_ind.html

Mine is a slide I took in Chicago about 1983 or '84. I happaned to see the old man standing there. He was probably waiting for a bus. I was glad to get him and the clock in the same frame.
I always liked this picture.

I would guess that mine is obvious to most, however this board has become so overwhelmingly European perhaps a link is necessary:

Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytsky. Leader of the Zaporozhian Cossack uprising of 1648 in east Ukraine. Read about his exploits here from a slightly distorted Little Russian point of view:
http://www.encyclopediaofukraine.com/pages/K/H/KhmelnytskyBohdan.htm
He's always fascinated me because he was a staunch champion of the Orthodox faith in a time when the Poles and Jews sought her outright annihilation and liberated his people from a yoke not entirely dissimiliar from our own.
I have a great avatar that I'm trying to use...It's the protagonist from "they live", a John Carpenter film. Ha-ever, it's too big, and I can't figure out how to make it smaller. Any tips will be most appreciated.
That would be Rowdy Roddy Piper, I believe. As to the resize, any common photo editor should allow you to resize the photo to fit within the 80x80 pixel size allowed.

I chose the Confederate Flag as my avatar, as I was born here in Arkansas. I grew up Southern and have traveled all over the United States and lived in the East, North, and West. I feel at home here in the South. This is where my family resides.
The South has a rich white culture that favors our race and welcomes other Whites to bask in fellowship with the racially aware that live here. The South also has a rich Christian heritage that remains to be conquered by Jews, communists and other sexual deviants. The South has a banner and that banner is known as DIXIE.
DIXIE is represented by the Confederate Flag, and DIXIE is forever entwined in Southern White Christian Culture. DIXIE should be displayed by every Southern White man, woman and child without fear of reprisal or punishment. I have DIXIE on display a few feet above the roofline of our house on a nice pole.
Jews and their negro brethern have constantly attacked DIXIE, but as long as I am still alive, their efforts to stop my open admiration and display of the Confederate Flag is likened as :wallbash:
They will falter, they will fail. I, and others like me shall prevail.
Much like that flag......

I don't use an avatar, but I wish to protest the title of this thread.
As this board's lone Italian, I was supposed to be the one to write "What's You Avatar"! While playing an accordion.

I'm lost as well. That cultural stereotype is probably not as wide spread as il ragno believes (accordion?). Anyway I'm off to get drunk and eat potatoes.

I just submitted this: http://forums.cigarweekly.com/images/avatars/41f0501e3e9594d191f9f.jpg
It almost looks like me, I smoke big stogies, and drink beer.
