[I]Today the Nobel prize for literature was awarded to John Maxwell Coetze, a South African writer. I have never read anything from him and will not judge his opus, but cannot help noticing his stalwart anti-apartheid credentials in a country whose white population is being crucified by black thugs after being 'liberated' from the evils of racial segregation. Following his exposure of the evils of apartheid, mr. Coetze did not stay in South Africa to enjoy the benefits of the ANC liberation he so much desired, but quietly emigrated to Australia. In the past years, the Nobel Prize for Literature was awarded to the ubiquitous 'Holocoust Survivor' (Imre Keresz), a Portugese stalinist (José Saramago), an Italian leftist buffoon (Dario Fo), an american professional victim negress (Toni Morrison), another South African race traitor (Nadine Gordimer) and others whose strongest credentials either included being part of some sort of non-white minority/nationality, or being marxist or both. The Nobel prize for literature has become a necrophiliac ritual where our marxist accademia dances on the carcass of the once proud western culture. And I don't even want to mention the Nobel 'Peace' prize whose laureats include such 'man of peace' as the terrorist Menachem Begin, the 'anti-racist' demi-god terrorist Nelson Mendela or the fraud Rigoberta Manchu`. Is it time to abolish this farce?[/I]

South African writer JM Coetzee has won this year's Nobel Prize for Literature. The Swedish Academy, which awarded the prize, praised Mr. Coetzee's works for what it called their well-crafted composition and analytical brilliance. John Maxwell Coetzee, whose novels and essays are characterized by a bleak vision of his racially divided homeland, is the second South African author to win the Nobel Prize. Nadine Gordimer received the award in 1991. Mr. Coetzee was the first writer to win Britain's prestigious Booker Prize twice, first for The Life and Times of Michael K in 1983 and, again, for Disgrace in 1999.
But the publicity-shy author has long been skittish about the attention of the media and stayed away from the awards ceremony on both occasions.
[B]Mr. Coetzee's main characters are often innocents or outcasts who are overwhelmed by historical forces over which they have no influence. South Africa's former apartheid system of separating the races is a recurring theme in his works.[/B]
The Swedish Academy praised Mr. Coetzee for his intellectual honesty, noting that the author has been, in its words, ruthless in his criticism of the cruel rationalism and cosmetic morality in western civilization.
The academy, in announcing the $1.3 million award, also noted that, although Mr. Coetzee makes the distinction between right and wrong crystal clear, he also portrays it as being ultimately pointless.
Mr. Coetzee was born in Cape Town to an English-speaking family of Afrikaaner background. Though he has spent most of his life in South Africa, he studied and worked in the United States and Britain and [B]emigrated to Australia two years ago.[/B]
His novels include Waiting for the Barbarians and Dusklands as well as his latest work of fiction, Elizabeth Costello. He has also written essays on such topics as rugby and censorship.
The literature prize is the first of the Nobels to be awarded this year. In the days ahead, the Swedish Academy will announce the winners of the medicine, physics, chemistry and economics prizes. On October 10, the Norwegian Academy will announce the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize.

When I read that I pretty much realized that he is just a treacherous asshole.
The Nobel Prize committee has always had a left wing agenda. The last nobel prize in literature that was awarded to a German, was given to Gunther Grass. I do not have to tell you where that man stands politically.

As much as I can't stand Gunther Grass' political leanings, I have some simpaty for the character. Some of his work is actually not bad (some is horrible, like 'Der Blechtrommell', which I hate). He also fought for his country in WWII which earns him a lot of points in my book. His latest book - 'Crab walk' - talks about the Wilhelm Gunstlof tragedy, appearently a tabu` theme in Germany until the book came out. I might be wrong, but he seems to be an genuine idealistic leftie, which I respect. Also, there seems to be still a scintilla of national feelings in the man. Compared to the other recent laureates, he seems passable. As for the rest, I guess Dr. Nobel would have done better to continue investing into more powerful explosives.

This opens up an even greater issue - the stagnation of basic/theoretical science since the 1950s or so (one of the last conceptual breakthroughs being the discovery od DNA in 1953 or so). Not dissimilar to the abomination called 'modern art'. Since our civilization started going downhill (roughly after WWII), the creativity in basic science went downhill too. We are still reaping the fruits of the last significant wave of scientific discovery in the first half of the 20th century. All we had from the 1950s on is technology - applied science, but no epochal breakthroughs to pose the bases of new industries of the future (only some intriguing new paradigms like the string theory etc.). Most of todays 'new' industries are based on discoveries made between 50 and 100 years ago (solid state phisics, organic chemistry, molecular biolgy etc.). I remember the year 2000 Scientific American (december 1999) that, in summing up our scientific zeitgeist, was almost desperate in trying to sound optimistic. This does not bode well for an economy addicted on 4-5% growth year after year based on a constant stream of new scientific discoveries. And that's why even the Nobel Prize in 'hard' sciences is lately given almost exclusively to good engineers rather than brilliant scientists (not to mention the invention of the Nobel prize for 'Economy' - clearly a Jewish ploy). Bottom line - the current environment is detrimental to western creativity in all fields - arts as well as sciences.

Gordimer is not a race-traitor - she's a Lithuanian Jew. I believe the same holds true for Mr. Coetzee as well.

The Nobel prize for literature has been a political basket of trash for a long time. As long ago as the 1920's H.L. Mencken advised Sinclair Lewis to turn the Honor down because the award was not literary but political. In more recent years the Nobel has become a total travesty, and is bestowed for who is considered the best shill for left-liberalism at the current time.
