September 26, 2003 -- A Hunter College student was shot and killed in Harlem while attending a meeting of an African-American cultural-awareness group, police said yesterday.
Matthew Hall, 18 - both of whose parents are Hunter professors - was shot once in the back at East 126th Street and Fifth Avenue at 9:15 p.m. Wednesday during a break in a Universal Zulu Nation meeting.
Police said there was an argument on the street involving several people.
It was unclear whether Hall was involved. But a black man in his 20s shot Hall with a a 9mm handgun before fleeing on foot, police said.
Hall, a first-year student who lived with his parents on Sheridan Square in Greenwich Village, was rushed to Harlem Hospital. He died seven hours later.
Cops described the gunman as 5-foot-11, weighing 150 pounds and wearing a white, orange and black striped shirt.
The victim's father, George Hall, told WNBC/Channel 4 that his son was an aspiring high-school teacher who liked writing and rap music.
Sources said that he had a 3.5 grade-point average.
Hall's mother and father are Hunter College professors, and the school has offered a $1,000 reward for information leading to the capture and conviction of the shooter.
George Hall told WNBC that his son joined the Universal Zulu Nation to learn more about black history and culture.
The black nationalist organization says its founder, Afrika Bambaataa, invented hip-hop music 30 years ago. The group's political philosophy appears similar to that of Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan.
Neighbors at his family's posh high rise said Matthew Hall was an anti-war activist, posting fliers after the 9/11 attacks opposing military action in Afghanistan.
"Our grief is not a cry for war," the signs read.
"He could understand the grief and pain of other people," said Anahit Gharutyunyan-Gaskill, 51, an Armenian immigrant who lives in the building.
"In my 10 years in this country, Matthew was the brightest person I've met in this building," she said.
"He was so smart and articulate. He was so politically aware at such a young age."
When asked what made him so intelligent, Gharutyunyan-Gaskill replied, "Probably his parents."

Not to speak ill of the dead, but...
If his parents were so smart, why did they allow their son to attend meetings of a Black Militant group? Last time I looked, anyone having similar views as Louis Farrakhan was largely a leftist militant extremist bent on wiping out whites in north america. If I loved my son (and I do) I don't think I would send him to a group of Neo-nazi wingnuts and think that he was in good hands 'learning about his culture' and not expect trouble.
Personally, I think his parents should be brought up on charges for gross negligence and depraved indifference. What kind of parents would let their child go to such a thing in the first place? Oh, I forgot. Black parents who just happen to be professors and teach at a (likely) ultra leftist institution.

I'm always amazed by the unwillingness of blacks to "sever the wicked" in their own community.

Well, ducky, events like the Columbine shooting are usually once-in-a-lifetime occurrences in White communities. Columbine, assuming it's still mostly White, has now gone back to being a safe place to live. When does Harlem go back to being a safe place to live, moron? :censored: freepers.

September 27, 2003 -- Members of the Universal Zulu Nation may have targeted a Hunter College student murdered in Harlem because they considered him a "white kid," law enforcement sources said yesterday. Matthew Hall, 18, was shot once in the back Wednesday night after a meeting of the group, whose Hunter College chapter he recently founded.
Police said there was an argument before the slaying at East 126th Street and Fifth Avenue around 9 p.m.
The shooter may have been linked to the organization and could have been someone who had been at Wednesday night's meeting, said the police sources.
[B]Investigators are looking into whether others in the group "took out some retribution" on Hall because he was light-skinned and had allowed white students to join the Hunter chapter, sources said. [/B]
Cops said they were not getting full cooperation from the Hunter Zulu group, which investigators believe was at odds with the organization's national leadership.
The group's resistance has angered people close to Hall, who was wearing an "I Love Zulu" shirt when he was shot.
"Everybody's keeping their mouths shut," said Olive Tuboku, 20, a friend. "I'm beyond mad."
Members of the black activist group said they are helping the cops and want Hall's killer to be punished.
"We want answers," said "Lord" Tawfiya El, a spokesman for the Universal Zulu Nation. "We have people out on the streets now trying to get that information. We want them found and prosecuted."
Some members fear the Zulus - a black nationalist organization founded by hip-hop artist Afrika Bambaataa, and in which Hall was a rising star - may be looking for revenge.
"If they take matters into their own hands, it's going to be worse," Tuboku said.
El denied the group is seeking revenge for Hall's slaying.
"We will cooperate to the authorities," he said. "Otherwise, we would be vigilantes - and that we're not."
Hall's mother, Chantal, said the group called her yesterday and assured her they were "working on" finding Hall's killer.
The slain teen's mother and father - a psychologist and an English professor at Wagner College - remembered their son as a peace advocate and devotee of Zen Buddhism who had a singular talent for poetry.
"My son was very warm and full of life," Chantal Hall said at the family's West Village home. "There were different sides to him, spiritual and political. He was very much aware of his black American roots."
Hall's mom said he sometimes performed his poetry at West Village clubs and that he had a talent for taking any two words she came up with and instantly making a rap song out of them.
"He was a perfect kid," she said. "He could have been anything. He decided he wanted to make a difference."
His father, George, said it was ironic that his son could die so violently since he was such a believer in peace.
"Matthew always tried to make peace," he said "He always said he could talk to people to stop the violence. He couldn't this time."

I have it: Blacks are by nature impulse control-impaired.
Hall was half-black, half-white --- dad was black, mom was white. Like I said, there's your African-American cultural awareness, Matthew. A bullet in the gut. Got it? Good.
Part of me can't help but feel a wee bit sorry for the mongrel dude: cursed with mixed blood, he didn't know where to fit in. Nobody was going to accept him. He picked one side, and they iced him because he brought the other side. Of course, if he'd tried to claim "white," nobody in even the Silent Brotherhood would have a laid a hand on his head. That's how white folks are.
