Understanding the Holocaust

She looks outside and can no more pretend She does not see her country getting darker. She’s lived here all her life, but she can’t mend The neighborhood. The news is even starker. Last night some men burned down old Nelly’s place, Just after raping her as punishment For being white. She hears it wasn’t race Related, yet who pauses to lament The woman murdered by the savages? She stands beside her locked and bolted door And she attempts to fathom the disease By its symptoms, sighing at the damages Inflicted on the working-class and poor, And the sirens only add to her unease.
