The Autodidact Newsletter is actually, in embryo, a single sign on system for the Circle of Crust. It is necessary, in Web 2 and 3/4, to have a solid foundation of email, since that is the most basic way to create ‘digital identities’. It is easy to buy a shared hosting plan, put up a BBS forum, and have ‘as many email addresses as you want’ created in the cpanel of your new domain — it is much harder to make sure that mail from those addresses doesn’t end up in Google’s Spam bucket or wherever.
