As I understand it, SCIENCE is primarily a body of correct opinions about the physical universe reverse-engineered to provide justification for the most cutting-edge ethical views, imparting to them a seal of infallibility borrowed from the fact that 'science' is also - or used to be - the name for a fairly successful practice of constructing intellectual models which facilitate accurate predictions regarding the physical universe. Thus, 'queer theory' is affirmed by 'brain science', while the heritability of IQ is not SCIENCE at all.

SCIENCE is also a social institution for the production of this theology - a church, essentially - which is under constant threat from primitive, rival theologians of enemy tribes, such as creationists, climate deniers, and so on. An endless flow of public funds is required to ward off the threat.

Invoking #Science is simply a signal to observers that you are onboard with the modern pet causes of the universalists, while at the same type asserting your superiority over any DUMB REDNECKS who aren't in 6 figure debt for a four year degree. You're not like those chuds, you're an intellectual who believes in science, and you are sufficiently #woke. This is why science signaling is so effective, attempting to counter any one of these signalers carries the immediate implication that you are anti-SCIENCE and hence uneducated and not qualified to even take part in the conversation.

The 'progress-phillistine' (Spenglers term for SCIENCE leftoids) who doesn't speak of 'spirit' let alone 'soul' places real faith in 'progress'. The ideal state is the herd animal. Once enough 'experiments' have been worked out the herd will be safe. No more ranks, no more conflicts arising from differences, no more hatreds or vengeance or wrath anymore. Philistines of Scientism really believe in bringing about this end state. One sees this in "popular science" of Neil Tyson or Richard Dawkins or Carl Sagan (deceased). Of course this isn't 'science' as practiced by Edison, or Newton or Hamilton or any other really great man, for these science (or mathematics) is their personal motivation, their personal joy and sorrow. The same goes for any true genius. Pop science (Scientism) on the other hand is just an expression of bovine feeling by urban, middling atheists.

People who aren't 'progress-phillisitnes are targets for 'social experiments' of the progress-phillisitne, sometimes these take the form of actual armed suppression. The War in Afghanistan is a good example. Ostensibly about 'terrorism' all sorts of eggheads and socialist boffins tacked their own pet interests onto the war. It became about 'women's rights' and 'freedom' and was pushed on the public as such.
