Allowing Assad to stay in power is now explicit Trump admin. policy. But you have to wonder what happens with US forces once ISIS is defeated.

My assessment on Trump's comments about chemical attacks by Assad (supposedly) today, and the firing of Steve Bannon:

Israel has looked at its increasingly bleak strategic options in Lebanon and Syria and found no way to defeat the now-substantially increased power of Hezbollah, on a wider than ever front, without a much larger scale re-run of 2006. Hezbollah now has access to the Golan front, Iraqi Shia manpower, Russian training, some SAM systems, a significantly improved missile capability and quantity (both ballistic and anti-ship) and the ability to directly import vast Iraqi Shia manpower for irregular war on Israel's northern front. Israel must do something, I am 100% certain that their planning staffs have been consumed with this problem since at least the fall of Aleppo, when it became clear that Hezbollah and Assad would indeed win the Syrian war with Hezbollah strengthened and ascendant. Israel's military capabilities are significant but I don't see how they could design operations that mitigate this threat sufficiently without unacceptable disruption to Israel's home front, unacceptable military casualties, and a generally unsatisfactory quagmire as a result (at best). I believe that the Israelis can come up with only one solution to the problem: play the America card.

Accordingly, it is possible that the Israeli government in cooperation with the Zionists in Trump's administration (they are many, and highly influential; Kushner is the highest profile one with the best access to Trump's ear) are now changing Syria policy. This started with the removal of Bannon, the chief obstacle to any American operation to solve Israel's Hezbollah problem.
