Transparent as fuck, indeed. Obama was just sitting on his arse because he expected Clinton to win and continue the support for Syrian jihadists (aka "rebels".) Now he has to save face in the last months and pre-empt Trump, whose policy in Syria will be this:

Donald Trump will end US support for Syrian rebels despite their pleas to him for help

President-elect Donald Trump has reaffirmed his campaign trail position that assisting the Syrian government in fighting Isis should be the US’ main objective in Syria , despite appeals from rebels for continued help in their fight against President Bashar al-Assad.

“I’ve had an opposite view of many people regarding Syria. My attitude was you’re fighting Syria, Syria is fighting Isis, and you have to get rid of Isis,” he said in a wide-ranging interview with the Wall Street Journal on Friday.

Mr Trump has stated that while he “did not like Assad at all”, shoring up the Assad regime is the best way to stem the extremism that has flourished in the chaos of the civil war and threatens the US.

He has also been emphatic about mending ties with Russia , Syria’s long-standing ally and military backer in the conflict.

“Russia is now totally aligned with Syria, and now you have Iran, which is becoming powerful, because of us, is aligned with Syria… and now we’re backing rebels against Syria, and we have no idea who those people are,” he told the Journal, referring to the hardline Sunni Islamist groups in the rebel ranks. "If the US attacks Assad, we end up fighting Russia,” he added.

After Trump's phone call, Putin's airstrikes pound Syria

Russia launched a major military offensive in Syria today, hours after President-elect Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke on the phone and discussed the need to join forces to combat terrorism.

"Today we started a large-scale operation to deliver massive fire on the positions of the Islamic State and Jabhat al-Nusra in the provinces of Idlib and Homs," Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said at a meeting Tuesday with Putin and Russian defense industry representatives.

Trump, who expressed respect for Putin's campaign, spoke with the Russian leader by phone on Monday.

"During the call, the two leaders discussed a great range of issues including the threats and challenges facing the United States and Russia, strategic economic issues and the historical America-Russia relationship that dates back over 200 years," the Trump transition team said in a public statement.

The Kremlin's news agency said Putin congratulated Trump and that the leaders agreed on "uniting efforts in the fight with the common enemy number one – international terrorism." The Kremlin also pledged to build "dialogue with the new American administration on the principles of equality, mutual respect and non-interference in the domestic affairs of each other."

Secretary of State John Kerry also discussed Aleppo with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, emphasizing the State Department's position that the solution must be political, not military. Hours later, the airstrikes began.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said a massive series of airstrikes shook the province of Idlib and the beleaguered Aleppo, which has been the focal point in a five-year war between U.S.-backed rebel forces and the Russian-backed regime of Bashar al-Assad.

Some of the strikes were aimed at al-Qaeda groups fighting alongside the rebels, the observatory said. An airstrike also destroyed a hospital in the town of Awejel just outside Aleppo, injuring many civilians, the British-based advocacy group said.

Jabhat al-Nusra is an al-Qaeda affiliate in Syria, aligned with the U.S-backed rebels. Russia has blamed the rebels' ties to terrorist groups for the dire humanitarian issues in Aleppo. The State Department has acknowledged that "marbleization" of the anti-Assad forces has been a problem.

So, it seems today's bombing started right after Trump's convo with Putin. It's still ongoing right now. Seems like a really big offensive, involving a lot of forces, they're definitely going hard now:

- Cruise missiles from Russian frigates
- Russian bombers from naval carrier group
- Russian bombers from land base
- Syrian air force

Aleppo siege, from thursday up to today - red is SAA, green is jihadists, purple is still contested:

As of now, Russia seems to be holding its fire in Aleppo, letting the SyAA do all the bombing on their own. Russian cruise missiles are mostly hitting Idlib, while Assad's boys are throwing everything they have at Aleppo. A hyooooge fuel air bomb used this morning:
