Wouldn't be surprised if Russia goes for it.

They sold out Serbia, Yugoslavia, Lybia, Iraq. Just another line in the long list of geopolitical failures for short-term gains (and probably someone's personal corrupt enrichment).

Russia knows full well that they'd eventually lose Tartus docking rights and that oil from the Gulf would be transiting through Syria on its way to Turkey, hurting Russian energy interests.

I am surprised that a hit squad hasn't been sent out by the West to assassinate Assad.

If Saudis promise (and somehow they prove that they can be trusted) not to use Syria as a territory for pipelines going to Europe and overal leave the majority of European market to Russia, then a common ground could be found.

There's another question about personal guarantees and personal security of leaders - see Milosevic, Hussein, Khaddaffi. America is now in business of executing people it doesn't like, and Putin pretty much has to cling to power forever as a matter of personal survival or he may end up in court sold out by the new regime as Milosevic was. OR he has to come to an understanding with the West so as not to alienate them too much and get a peaceful retirement plan.

Iraqi Kurds are threatening to step in to help their brothers in Syria. This is an added layer of complexity considering that Iraq's Kurds are the main beneficiaries of the Iraq War (even moreso than Iran) and are very pro-Western.

As expected some newslines in Russia have appeared, saying that Saudi offer was turned down - not because the deal was bad, but because the "buyer" couldn't be trusted to live up to his promises.
