I am pretty certain that the Mughals executed a ton of Hindus until they realized that the logistics involved in converting/exterminating all these millions of Hindoo layabouts just wasn't worth it.

You see this a lot in that area; conquerors just getting disgusted with Typical Subcontinental Behavior and not bothering to administer it effectively. The Mongols abandoned a large chunk of Pakistan soon after subjugating it because they just said fuck it, it's too hot.

While I'm of the opinion that Ango has handily illustrated that the notion of Muslims not tolerating other religions (even in Dar al-Islam) is at best hyperbolic, I'll speak specifically to your claim that secularist despots are the only bulwark protecting kuffar minorities in Muslim countries from extermination.
